Game laws are set by the people through the legislature. If you want the tail wagging the dog, then let the agency experts tell you what is best. NDGF is following a model from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. It is not an agency; it is a non-profit NGO. Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency or AFWA, the NDGF membership fee is almost $40,000. Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency or WAFWA membership is $15,000. Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency or MAFWA membership fee is $4100. AFWA has about 100 members paying about the same bringing in $5.5 million according to their IRS 990. They are not a 501(C)3 accepting money from anyone or foundation. They are 501(C)4 and 501(C)6 meaning they only get money from membership and therefore can lobby. They have many committees for Sage Grouse, Mule Deer, Human Dimensions etc. The Wildlife Health Committee is made up of 28 GnF personnel from various States. Our GnF director is leadership sponsor and our DVM are both on the panel and put their names on the Best Management Practices or the document they say gives them the authority to ban. There is no science in the document, it is data. The supporting data is backed by references and cited literature. I do not believe it was written by 28 GnF persons. The literature cited and data references are impressive. Like US Geological Survey or some other federal agency. We the people do not have access to that material without a freedom of information request. I would wager an equal amount of data exists that does not support their position. What is lost in these discussions is NGO or non-governmental organization. The membership fees come from all 50 State Game and Fish agencies and their federal partners like EPA, USFWS, USDA, USGS. https://www.fishwildlife.org/landing/membership/member-list They are not so much an NGO as they are a GO or governmental organization. And then of course in that list is all their surrogate non-profits @ $55K for a membership. It's not like a non-profit does zero good. There are many discussions on international migratory birds, Pitt-Robertson money etc. etc. But it can also be a boiler room of ideas for more legislation for more spending. Deficit spending or redline spending with no mechanism to pay for this stuff. The CWD Research and Management Act came right out of there passed in Dec. 2022 has not ever been funded. Another is the Recovering Americas Wildlife Act $1.4 Billion and has the potential to bring $23 million to ND. On December 17th, 2024, the NDGF held a habitat summit. Three days before that Rep. Debbie Dingel from Michigan introduced for the umptieth time the RAWA. Coincident or collusion?? The wildlife industry is big business.
