Its a major monkey-see, monkey-do industry with att and verizon=(the big 2). Verizon had to come out with something to match/beat att's unlimited plan i.e (if you have att as well as directv--you're guaranteed 22 gb's before you're throttled to 2g for $100). That's for a phone you already OWN/payed off/0 contract on. Now i'm sure you'll eventually see att getting rid of the clause where you have to have/get directv to be eligible for this plan and I've personally been waiting since the news of att purchasing directv; for verizon to make a major push at aquiring dish network. They are obviously struggling with the attempt of the yahoo acquistion after the X2 yahoo hacking issues at the most inopportune time though. Annnnd now att has been trying to complete the acquistion of time warner for a few months which points the needle to att becoming a total in-home solution such as midcontinent with home internet, dish, wireless, and home security. Change is good so they say, but my god do i miss the days of simplicity most days.. Word around the tree stump is best buy may stop selling att and take on tmobile at least in a particular south east part of the state. Lunker, i wish i would have known about your issue and im guessing you were using a 3g device/blackberry curve maybe?? You previously had alltel and when your plan was grandfathered it would only work on 3g capable devices, but att has recently ended 2g service; which your phone was previously working/piggy-backing off that for data and 3g will be gone by 2020 as well. Its just the way the old alltel unlimited data plan worked on certain bands/frequencies of att and now both are eventually going away to get ready for 5g. You could research CDMA (verizon/sprint/boost mobile) vs GSM (att/cricket/tmobile/h20) bands and frequencies til you're blue in the face, but because of your phones technology as well as compatability with the plan you had, the timeclock was unfortunately running out with the plan youve had for ages and one of which most people employed by att had not a clue how to decipher the details to explain it correctly to you.. That got a little long-winded and i apoligize, but i know how frustrating how all this stuff can get for the average consumer at times!
