fossil fuels is the cheapest and most reliable source out there.

No huge start up costs, no pissed off neighbors, no eyesores, readily available, and pretty neat.

Coal and natural gas generation (at the moment) are the cheapest and most reliable form of energy available.. Sure, one can try to become self reliant and survive off the grid using geothermal, solar, wind, battery storage, etc.. But at the end of the day, the sun isn't always shining, the wind doesn't always blow, and according to the NGO's CO2 emissions will affect the core temp of the earth- blah..blah.. With that being said, renewable energy alternatives are great if planning for dooms day, but remember those RE options only have a very small capacity factor due to variable operating conditions. The metropolitan areas in this country need to realize that within this energy dependent society, fossil fuel generation will always be the most cost competitive, reliable, maintenance free and ultra clean energy you can get.
