Simple question: Should we fisherman come together and show our disgust for the past 7-8 months of protests by doing our own protesting? I'm not calling for daily demonstrations as I'm guessing we all jobs that require our presence. The kind of protesting I'm calling for is to boycott any casino run fishing tournaments within the state.

Far too often, I have a short-term memory and have a fairly forgiving mentality. The pipeline protests really rubbed me the wrong way. The problem is not what the tribe was fighting for but it was how they went about it. It became pretty evident that they lost control of what they were trying to do by giving the extremists a reason to come to North Dakota.

I'm thinking that with the shenanigans that took place during a Sakakawea tournament last summer would be enough to drastically reduce participation.

So let's here both sides of the argument on why or why we should not fish casino run tournaments.

i am actually for this. As an oilfield worker, I almost felt personally attacked by how they approached their 'rights'. I also work and fish and hunt in Newtown. I was actually thinking of volunteering during the tourney this year to help alleviate some of the issues if I could. But I'm game to boycotting if we can do it the right way!

They usually are run like crap anyway. Only thing that drives is a big guaranteed #1 purse.

I, for one, will not participate in any reservation run tournaments. Pisses me off that it started off about protecting the water and then gets twisted into inequality and how they always get shit on. I have never had a shit ton of land given to me because I'm a German Norwegian. Eff that, I'm out!

I don't fish tournaments so I don't have a dog in the fight. That being said, the state needs to start healing someplace. Keep in mind the protest got out of hand because of a few people affiliated the leadership as well as non-residents who had absolutely no concern for the tribe. Most residents of SR especially wanted those protestors gone. The question now becomes, "What is best for all?" I don't have an answer to that question but do know it's best for the state for the healing to begin at sometime. For me I'd guess I would consider supporting the tournaments that have been well-run in the past. Perhaps the next post will be from someone suggesting that all the tournaments were never well-run. And that is also too bad.

how could pkc or the tribe even support fishing tournaments now let alone host one??? they are the water protectors... can't imagine they would want more fossil fuels being used on "their water" anyway...

them hosting anything but a shore fishing tournament will be total hypocrisy...

only normal people would understand the concept of hypocrisy. I haven't been in one but won't be now. I didn't have to sacrifice much to never step foot in there again. I think I've only been in PKC twice and those times were for crab legs.

I am waiting to see if there is a change in leadership at Standing Rock. The whole fiasco with the UND nickname that supposedly wasn't supported by the whole reservation (after the fact) and now a shit show protest started by leadership at Standing Rock that supposedly wasn't supported by the whole reservation (after the fact) The leadership is either supported and voted in again or they are voted out because the people down there actually don't agree. Wonder how that will turn out? I don't think its the state that needs to extend an olive branch at this time!
I wont fish one of their tournaments or set foot in one of their casinos!

Fish On!

I agree 100%. The people were not all for what took place. But if those are the people that they choose to share their voice with the rest of North Dakota then it falls squarely on everyone's shoulders. I will help the healing process after Dave Archambault is crucified.

Since PKC tournament is over 100% payback, its a tournament for the fisherman. The only way the casino will make money is the residual effects of fishermen gambling.

I don't have an answer to that question but do know it's best for the state for the healing to begin at sometime.

This is the problem with this nation any more. No matter the action, it needs to be excused or justified away in the name of "healing" to the point where no one is held accountable for their choices and actions anymore.

At that point when there is no pain, no accountability what is to stop the same behavior/actions from happening again.

The people within the tribes that did not support this need to hold these people accountable. Not just for the DAPL protests but for the bullshit that happens on the res year round. Is it difficult..yeah but if they can not find the drive and purpose to help themselves and take accountability for their what happens, how can they expect any credibility when they protest about how the white man took their lands and oppresses them when in fact it is their own people that is doing it from within.

NOTHING will ever change for the better if we simply ignore or excuse actions such as what happened here in our state with this protest.

The 100% payback is only further incentive to not fish. This would send a strong message that we anglers don't base our fishing decisions based on money. As we all saw with the protests, there were people protesting just because they were getting paid, not because they believed in the cause. Should we anglers be viewed any differently if we are willing to turn a blind eye and support these fishing tournaments just because there is a good payout?

Sit it out. They have to be held accountable or else it will be just like our Government ( business as usual ).
If they aren't held accountable they will do this again somewhere down the line. Just watch protests when no one gets arrested or the book thrown at them. They have no fear as they know nothing is going to happen.
They held our LE hostage for how many months and they put the Counties and State in how many millions of debt? They then said our LE was the cause of all the unrest. BS is what i say. I was raised old school and if you do the crime you do the time. Plain and simple!

I wonder how it would go over if a few hundred fishermen got together and used boats/pickups to block 1806, 6, and the bridge @ Mobridge starting 1wk before the tourney though the last day of the tourney. No boats, fuel, or bait gets though that week.
