My family and I were catching a lot of nice walleye today prior to the state record-even my kids were reeling some in. When I felt the bite of the big one, I set the hook hard. The fish didn't move and started pulling drag. It was doing several head shakes and stayed down in the water for a long time. I knew I hooked a big one but many were saying it was a large carp or large sucker. That's when I started forcing it...not realizing what I had caught. I didn't think I was going to get it in and after several minutes it broke the surface. My buddy screamed "huge walleye." That's when it turned fast or rolled and went right into the faster current. It started getting away from me going downstream. My buddy Joe (Sheriff's officer) ran downstream with the net. He ran faster than I thought possible and jumped over rocks and bars. He got into position and I was able to pull one last time. That's when he got it in the net. He looked down and was just silent. He handed the net to me and that's when I started yelling and screaming! I knew it had potential to be a record. I've been fishing for 35 years and it was the biggest walleye I had ever seen. We packed everything up immediately and drove to the nearest station with a certified scale to get it weighed and verified by GF. It got weighed at 3 different locations to make sure we had an accurate weight.

Congrats man! I can't even imagine! I think about catching a state record every single time I wet a line and I wouldn't believe it if it did happen to me. Can't wait to see how the mount turns out! Maybe think about a glass case for it so it doesn't get dirty

Congrats! Hard to believe that came out of the Heart River. I bet the shorelines will be packed for a little while.

I'm the lucky angler who caught the new state record walleye! Official weight was 16lbs 9oz or 16.59 lbs. It was caught legally in the mouth and verified by witnesses. It was netted by a Sheriff's officer. I caught several fish today prior to catching the record. But, there are several being foul hooked too. It was caught on a white Northland jig and Moxi plastic bait.

Congrats! Hopefully you get free northland jigs and moxi plastics for life!!!

I caught this fish a few days ago and released it! Kidding, kidding.
Congrats on the awsome fish!!!

I do have a question though if the fish is UNINTENTIONALLY snagged wouldn’t it still be a record?? I’m just curious cause I seen a ton of big fish being unintentionally snagged down there and they are all being kept.

There is a passage in the fishing regs on snagging.

"A foul-hooked or snagged fish is defined as any fish hooked or caught in any area from behind the gill covers to the tail. Any foul-hooked or snagged fish must immediately be returned to the water regardless of condition. Possession of foul-hooked fish is illegal. Attempting to snag fish is illegal."

No kidding! A certain organization could have a field day down there. There are a ton of big ones getting snagged down there and 90% are being kept. Some days the big ones actually bite, others they get snagged only.

That is awesome! I saw the video of you with it on the beach with the kids and getting it on the scale, pretty darn cool! Congrats!!
Your photo with the family says it all!

Holy smokes!!! Congratulations!! I love that you caught it fishing from shore!! Can't wait to see the mount and the story that I'm sure will be in every state newspaper and outdoor magazine in the coming days and months!! I second the motion that this "newbie" deserves instant NDA Legend status!!!!!

Who would have known the Heart has such a population of huge walleyes? Being that walleyes in the Missouri don't travel in the spring...:::

Congrats to the lucky angler! I wouldn't doubt that this record won't last long either with the state of the Missouri system...

The fish can move a long way in a short time in a river system. Quite a number of years ago my neighbor at Van Hook caught a tagged fish. He called it in and it was tagged three days prior in the White Earth Bay. So it traveled all the way from white earth bay south past the bridge all the way down around pouch and up to the north end of Van Hook in three days. That has to be close to 45 miles I'd guess.

They move a bunch at Devil's too. Caught a fish in early June (south end of Black Tiger Bay) that was tagged 6 weeks earlier at 6 Mile Bay bridge.
That's a longer timeframe, but I would never have thought a lake walleye would move 45 miles (provided it took the shortest path mostly over 40ft of water). Think is if took the path following the shoreline or at least at 20ft ridge.
