I’ve been looking at buying a lever action, specifically a Marlin, probably the Guide gun chambered in .45-70. Why you ask? Well...because. I want one. Really all there is to it. So anyway, looking at how other folks have their own set up, I’ve seen quite a few with the scope mounted like so:

Why do folks have the scope mounted so far forward? Prevent scope bite or what?

I forget the guys name right now, but he sort of got the craze going for what they call a scout rifle. His favorite was a scope set up like this on a bolt action 308. Short, fast, with a low power scope and wide field of view.

Well that’s kinda what I was thinking. Probably a fixed 4x, maybe even a red dot. Definitely not a long range gun.

Jeff Cooper is the guy I was thinking of. My gosh he wrote wrote so many articles and then I forget his name. The Ruger Scout rifle was his concept. He was a rough character. Shot a few Viet Cong with a 44 mag just to check it out. He was more of a model 1911 sort of guy. I think he also founded Gunsight.

Not a huge gun guy.
But my brother won this Ruger tactical rifle the other night in 6.5 creedmore. It's supposed to be fairly accurate.
What scope would you put on it that wouldn't break the bank for coyote hunting say out to 500 yds. Also what reticle?

I think Col Cooper designed the Steyr Scout rifle before Ruger launched theirs. The Steyr was designed and marketed around their .376 Steyr cartridge.

Ghost, you might even consider skipping the scope altogether and just putting a peep on such a rifle.....

That is a damn fine rifle and your brother would be silly to limit himself to 500 yards with it. Define “doesn’t break the bank” as each fellas interpretation is different. Leupold VX-3i line of scopes is a good place to start. Depending on magnification, tube diameter, and reticle, prices range from ~$360 to $750. Glass is pretty good, lightweight, but the eye relief can shift a little between minimum and maximum magnification. The shifitimg eye relief would be less problematic on that Ruger rifle due to the adjustable stock length.

Here are a couple that I like a lot. I’ve had a VX6 3-18x44 for awhile. I have a VX-5HD 3-15x44 coming this week.

They actually do have pretty decent iron sights that I don’t mind that come standard which I’m sure you already knew. Not sure what I’ll do with it since I don’t actually have it yet.

Peep sights whoop the snot outta standard irons for both quickness and precision. At least they do for me.

Yup, shot hundreds of dogs with a peep sight on an AR and shot over a million rounds through it as a Marine in my former life. We would qualify annually with peep sights on a standard M-16 from 200,300 and 500, no big deal.
