I'd be curious to hear what the ND peace officers think of this bill.

Why wouldn't they support it? This bill is upholding our constitutional rights. It's not like some piece of paper is going to prevent someone from breaking a law anyway. Do you think some dude set out to murder people gives 2 shits about a CCW law?

Just thinking out loud here....Say this bill passes. Democrats have already raised the question about training for people who want to carry. I too would have some mild concerns with people who have zero experience with firearms running around with a handgun on them.

I propose we require firearms training as a graduation requirement for all ND high school seniors as part of the gym class or health class curriculum. At the rate high school trap leagues are taking off along with the growing youth marksmanship programs a lot of the training infrastructure is already in place.

I think that's a great idea and it will give those kids who don't come from gun owning families more knowledge and less ignorance about firearms and firearm safety. The lib's will never let it happen though.

I'll be honest though I'm more concerned with some meth head out to kill me then I am some joe blow who knows nothing about guns wanting to carry a pistol for his personal protection. He's more apt to shoot himself in the leg then hit me in the head by accident. ;)

Just include hunters safety in the public education curriculum, as an add on to a class thats already there, maybe health... Have instructors go in for a week, teach the kids and then give them some credit for passing the test at the end... This would have huge benefits, but some parents would obviously oppose... Let them sign a waiver to allow their kids to sit out or something, teach them about rainbows and tampons instead.

I think there are about 25 democrats in the ND House/Senate combined so the bill could pass easily. Requiring training does a ton to promote shooting sports and also throws a bone to the Democrats. As a whole is presents a great opportunity to promote the shooting sports AND restore our 2nd amendment rights.

I find it interesting that their poll beside the story shows 67% against the bill. Fargo really is little Minneapolis.

LEOs already approach every vehicle/house as though the person may be armed so this shouldn't change how they operate at all. However, that won't keep them from objecting. Every year we have FOP or another LE group testify against loosening restrictions on carrying weapons and each year that goes by their objections prove to be unfounded.

I saw somewhere that FOP hasn't provided any input on it. The libs are going to shit bricks like they always do and some Republicans will have a shallow perspective on this and cave, but I think it'll go through.

Nothing. This basically allows someone who wants to open carry to put a jacket on in the winter and not be subject to a crime.

Actually, open carry is currently only permissible if you have a license to carry. There are exceptions for transporting an unloaded gun.

This is true.
Non permit holders may carry one hour before sunrise till one hour after sunset provided the firearm is unloaded and in plain sight.

Cannot wait for the shit show this creates in the courts. I know several people who have been rejected because their background check flagged a couple misdemeanors and felonies they thought were distant memories, and if they would have bought the gun themselves, instead of their wife 'gifting' it to them. They would have known that they legally can not own or carry a gun in North Dakota.

If your fillet knife has a blade longer then 5" it better be out in the open. Otherwise you need a permit to conceal it. So if you have it under your car seat and get searched you are in trouble. That's the beauty of these permit laws. They make criminals out of law abiding citizens.

But they are saying you need a permit to open carry also? Or is that only a firearm, not any 'weapon'?

North Dakota knife law is short and to the point. It allows for the ownership and open carry of any type of knife.
It is illegal to conceal carry gravity knives, switchblades, dirks, daggers, stilettos, scimitar, swords, or any knife with a blade 5 inches or longer.
