livewell help...

so, my livewell pump went out this weekend... it's actually a bilge pump on the toon...

the stock 1 is a 500 gpm pump... i'd like to replace it with a bigger 1 - maybe a 750 gpm and hook up a hose to use for a wash down system as well...

any danger going bigger like this??? anyone done it??? don't want to blow any connections apart and have a bigger mess...

Did you take it apart and clean it I thought mine died a couple times but after a cleaning it worked good. I was going to replace mine with a bigger pump to

i didn't... worked for 1/2 a day, then an oh shit deal with a fish on - boat sideways - line caught on bilge pump - line in prop deal... wouldn't work after that... gotta get a tester on it and make sure there's power there yet...

have a 500 now and going up to a 1000 gph would run $15 more, same size 3/4" outlet, and from 2.5 to 3.2 amp draw... not a big difference on power or price, and would double the output which would b nice for volume and pressure when hooking up a hose...

yep i was thinking on the same exact lines. I pulled the top of the canister and washed it out and it worked like new i dont know how but i think it gets a littel gritty in there when on the trailer i would have thought being submerged in the water would clean it out

Might have to check the size of the fuse running the pump, other than that you should be fine.

I replaced my live well and bilge pumps years ago. If you upgrade the pump that brings water into your boat, I'd suggest you upgrade the bilge pump to at least equal the live well pump. I like to be able to pump water out of my boat faster than I can pump it in.

You will want to check the housing for the pump, assuming it's a cartridge style like the Johnson series. Different gph pumps may have different housings, especially when you double the rating.

you can do it if the new one doesn't need more current thus bigger wires and fuse. I would leave that and add a second one maybe.

Mine went out a couple years ago I bought the same brand but went from 500 to 750 and I never replaced any wires or hoses just plugged new motor in old casing still works fine and fish stay alive better

crisis averted - went out to check the voltage to the motor to make sure it wasn't a wiring problem, turned it on and it worked fine... i'll roll with it for now and see what happens...

Probably a loose connection in there somewhere, it will of course rattle loose when you need it most again.
