Blue green algae has been around since for ever. It happens every year late summer.

Oh stop ffs hot weather low water levels in sloughs,ponds and dugouts walla blue green slime every late summer into fall until freezeup years back sodak opening pheasant weekend northeast sodak 80 + degrees over 50 birddogs fell to blue/green in two days in webster sd working pups came across shit water,stock ponds jumping in drinking the slime less than one hour pup laid up some slow death bleeding from the mouth,at the time no fix terrible slow death.

Yes, blue green algae is a normal thing, but its getting worse because of shitty water quality and farm runoff loading these water bodies with excess nutrients. Drainage, fertilizer, chemical....there you have it. Unfortunately not much is "pristine" these days.

My boy took some drone pictures of a lot we bought this summer that had clear water 2 weeks ago and I almost cried when I saw all the algae that appeared since I had been there last . I went there to collect a sample today and it was gone. Does it sink or where does it disappear to ? I don't think the wind blew it away but it might have.

This is what happens when it dies.

When blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) die, they sink to the bottom of the water body and begin to decompose, a process that consumes dissolved oxygen and can lead to fish kills. This decomposition also breaks open the cells, potentially releasing toxins into the water, especially if the blooms were dense enough to block sunlight from underwater plants.

Its technically a bacteria and not an algae like we see in alot of lakes. Thats what gives it that shiny oil look when its on top of the water.

Even when dried it can be very toxic a bunch of dogs in utah got sick last spring when they were on a shoreline of a training pond that had been affected the summer before. They saved a couple but a couple died and they did an autopsy and found it was the bg algae in a dried up form that killed them.

I have a couple ponds I train in that i have looked at treating so i dont have to worry about it but this year has been so dry they dont have much water in them.

Slow or stagnant water, warm temps , abundant sunlight and high nutrient loads are how it brews up

With the amount of ag chemicals used in today's farming, it's hard to not have over-nutri soils & waters.
The run-off acumilates in ponds, lakes, streams, etc. Plus, it soaks into the water table, and we get to drink that crap! Can you say cancer?

Where do you think fertilizer and chemicals are over applied? A farmers field or a lawn in town. Then ask yourself which would be more susceptible to run off of said chemicals and fertilizer.
