This is more than a little annoying...the circled column is tags awarded in resident drawing. The column to the left is non-resident reduction. Were a small handful of non-residents awarded tags where residents were rejected completely?

Given the current situation with hunting here, there should never be a non-resident tag issued prior to any resident tag being issued.

It’s in the laws, game and fish has no choice how many go to gratis or non-res. We could try get it changed but the landowner rights brigade will shut her down. I’m all for landowner rights but that card is played a little too fast and often when it comes to wildlife management.

It can be changed. You just have to go about it right.

I remember about 20 years ago, give or take, a thread on fishing buddy “are we living the good old days of deer hunting”

We definitely were!!

I’m probably done hunting deer in ND. Just my choice
We truly were. I remember hunters all over the state were lobbying for the “earn a buck” system where you had to take a doe before you could take a buck since there were so damn many. I remember hearing shots in all directions at the crack of noon on opener. Haven’t heard a single shot yet. I remember every bar lined with dirty trucks and some with a buck on the tailgate. That was also when you didn’t have to drive 10 miles to find a small drainage, slough, or shelter belt. Now if there is an oasis piece of habitat and you’re lucky enough that the landowner isn’t hunting it, you’re in competition with the rest of the county.

I don’t know man. They got the pronghorn gratis system changed to even it out to non landowners by limiting the unit tags to 50% split and judging by the landowner and ag group backlash and vows for revenge they’ll never let it happen with deer.

I still believe the easiest improvement that could be made to ND deer licensing system to get more people out deer hunting is a one tag system, use it for bow or rifle.
100% and that’s what it’s probably going come down to. I guess it’ll just depend on how bad the lobbying on the G&F is by the big money people

It's the bow hunters. last time it was discussed on here there was a poll and 70% of nda members who responded were against it.

I haven’t shot a deer down here for 6 ish years and only apply for a really hard to get tag east river . West river numbers are so low just buy points. Seems migration just starts right around deer season so I would rather do that. At this point I’m past the killing stage with deer so it would have to be really special for me to pull the trigger.

Like Kurt , I'm over killing deer, although I still do every year, it isn't as fun as it used to be. I do it for the meat because wife and I both love venison. I'd gladly give up my gratis tag and great hunting spot to another hunter for 1/2 of the meat if NDGF allowed it. I quit going to meetings with suggestions because NDGF can be real hard , if not impossible, to reason with , unless things have changed.

You basically don't see very many people walking because there is minimal land to hunt. And don't give me the line of bullshit " go knock on doors ". Been there, done that. $$$
Have a few people that I have become great friends with, but they also have hunting family members and can't just turn it over to me when I ask.
We use to go walk from one main road to the next (sometimes if lucky, 2 mile stretch). It was exhilarating up and over the next hill. You are damn lucky to be able to go a 1/4 section and back now.
Love hunting but, Just about to hang up all guns . . .

do they still give out refuge permits ? It's been 40 years since I hunted the prairie but the refuge was some dandy hunting if you like to walk .

Going into the local Coast-To-Coast on the Thursday before opener for some extra 270 rounds and being told they were out and the truck would be the next Wednesday.

I remember when Gambles had the round ring style holder full of steel lock deer tags that you bought over the counter.
