maybe if he would have held the gun sideways, and was tanner. Maybe some low hanging pants, with some boxers showing.

I am not sure, but I hear Dixie playing in here somewhere too. The Duke boys used arrows with explosives.
olden days are neat

The only thing wrong with the picture is the tank top. I was always taught that the American Flag was not intended to be a piece of clothing.

What if he was a black kid with pants down to his knees holding a "gat" in one hand, a wad of Benjamins in the other, posing in front of an Escalade?

I know it's semantics, but in my mind (and in many smaller schools especially) principals ARE teachers. They may have more pull, but they still teach.

But I digress. Schools, especially these days, are constantly battling and sorting out what is appropriate. I remember in high school when a rather well endowed female was reprimanded for wearing a tank top with spaghetti straps. It wasn't her fault Fruit of the Loom's tensile strength wasn't great enough to snuggly wrangle her mammoth melons. Yet, one teacher (a female) didn't deem her attire appropriate and she was asked to change into something less erection inducing.

Her mother was LIVID. Not at her daughter, but at the school. I remember hearing the screaming because I was in study hall at the time and wondered if a cat or some furry critter had gotten caught in an air duct.

Despite her wailing, the teacher and principal stuck to their guns and soon implemented a more defined policy on clothing. As I recall, clothing was (and probably still is) always a hot issue in high school, and I even had to turn my T-shirt inside-out one day because it was advertising Moose Drool Brewery (my folks bought it for me when they took a trip to Montana). My parents weren't mad when I told them I couldn't wear it any more. Mom even said, "oh, well if that's what your teacher said then I guess you better keep it at home."

Made sense to me, despite thinking it was a pretty dumb rule at the time. Now older, wiser and a parent myself, I can see the reasoning.

This is the same high school that currently has one of the best trap teams in the state of Minnesota (which really pisses me off because it came about 13 years too late! Gaaa! Trap league would have been so much more fun than tennis).

As for you question about a Wingmaster vs. AR, I honestly don't know what the principal's reaction would have been. I would expect the same. My buddies and I hunted a ton in high school, and often (stupidly) kept our shotguns in the trunk of our vehicles so we could jump ponds or walk ditches on the way home. But never once did I think it was smart to take a picture of said gun and get it in the yearbook. Common sense told me that was a dumb idea, despite the fact I was probably one of the most diehard hunters in our high school (I used to bring VHS hunting tapes in to watch during our last period of the day, which was a study hall/free period deal).

Like I said, I think intent plays into this. Dad/son obviously were hoping to stir the hornets nest. Well, I guess they were successful. Good for them.

Ha! Good point.

I took picture with my family dog and guns. Also made sure the first and last periods of the day were free to go hunt. Most of my friends had guns hanging in racks or on the front seat of the pick up. This was along time ago though way back in 97. Hell we even walked in the school with our gun to refinish the stock in wood shop. I graduated with 400 people so not a small town school. The difference between this and the chick with the big cans that caused an immediate disruption if this picture was allowed in the year book would anyone other than people who have the year book know about it. How does said picture affect how kids are leaning in school. I would guess it is causing more disruption because of principal guy. Kids love to put it to the man now they have a reason to stir the shit all due to the principal riding his high horse. Another thing is the dad should have went in spoke his piece and been done. Posting on social media is some attention seeking garbage. Though it gives us something to have some good interweb debate which is neat.

slim brings up an interesting question... for those that support the picture, would you feel the same given the circumstances he outlined? personally, i don't think its that big of a deal. but, if the school says it won't be allowed, i ain't gonna get in no pissing match over it. my bladder is too small.

My big idea when I was a senior was to take a picture with my motorcycle. As a macaroni middler, I was neither unpopular nor popular. For some reason, I figured doing my best GQ in a white wife beater with my riding jacket slung over my shoulder would make the girls drop panties faster than a greased down Justin Timberlake with puppies in each arm.

Never mind the fact my motorcycle was a woefully underpowered Kawasaki Ninja 250 (about as bad ass as a Geo Prizm with a spoiler), but the cool "blue steel" look I'm giving the camera makes me resemble an advertisement for stool softeners.

To this day I can't look at it without cringing uncontrollably. Thank God those weren't the only pictures we printed. And NO, it wasn't the one that made it into the year book.

duckslayer nailed it:

"....just a fervent contrarian mentality to "stick it to the liberals."

Seriously, though, this is why we can't have nice things. Now because of this, they'll probably pass some school rule that all senior pictures must be taken in school by a hired photographer. They'll remove all creative license to avoid any conflict in the future."

I kinda wanna slap the parents.

.

Sooooooo then as school in their "struggle" decides it is "appropriate" for a boy who is gender confused to use the girls locker room decides it is "appropriate" for this boy to submit a senior pic of him dressed in a stunning evening gown that is acceptable but this is not ? How about if the Federal govt tells them is has to be "appropriate"?

Just curious where everyone draws their lines.

But I did notice your usage of the "Murican" descriptor in your first post that is common in progressive dialogue where it is used as a derogatory term for those with differing values than those using it that they do not "tolerate".

So if this was a fella in a dress holding a rainbow flag and his two Dads and the ACLU were filing a lawsuit to force this pic to be published, is that a case of "just a fervent contrarian mentality to "stick it to the conservatives."? Or is it viewed by society now as sticking up for ones Constitutional rights?

Just wondering what is acceptable in "Murica" anymore. I mean under the 1st amendment we can chant "death to cops" but if we insert Muslim in for cops we will be prosecuted by the highest legal authority in the land.

So what would be the response if this fella was in a National Guard uniform instead of his "wife beater" holding an AR 15 in front of the flag? Would the people calling for it to be banned be any different?

If the school board has set policy hey fine, just make sure that policy includes everything anyone can find offensive.

And one by one we fall in line or be ostracized in society
......it is easy comrade.

Haha along with my dog and gun pick i had some sweet ones with an awesome silk purple shirt and a bad ass bowl hair cut. I think through the halls of time every one that looks at their senior pics 20 years later thinks WTF was i thinking. They have every class in mobridge senior pics hanging around the gym here i have went and looked at them and from the 70's on it was some classic stuff.

Since we're talking about painful senior pictures...

Perm. Bermudas. White legs. My crappy Cut-N-Jump kneeboard.

In the scheme of things, it went (remember, this was 1988) Don Johnson, Tom Selleck, Tom Cruise, James Kemp...

I've seen thousands of pictures of just graduated high school seniors holding scary "Black Guns". However, these pictures were taken in Iraq and Afghanistan and they were wearing full battle rattle and wearing the american flag on their person. I see NOTHING WRONG with this picture and if this is what he's into, more power to him!!!

Slim, the difference IMHO, is one is supporting the American way and the other is glorifying crime.

I believe they call that "Swag" or something. Not sure though, as I am not that hip to scene. I'm just a white bread cracker.

Oh man I wish I had a painfully bad yearbook photo - I would start a new thread.

- - - Updated - - -

i dont know about you guys, but i would LOL hard

I lol'd at "black gun" dude's pic.

Not because of the gun though. Maybe the "trying too hard" is what got me.

I do love that fact that he's gung ho for the red, white, and blue though.

BTW - it was Dad's take-no-prisoners behavior that prompted me to post this thread. Not the first time he's gone on a rant. Google his name plus "Sanford". I do appreciate his passion about political correctness, etc.

One thing we all need to realize is all this bickering means basically dick, because SCOTUS ruled on a similar case back in the 80s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazelwood_School_District_v._Kuhlmeier

In a nutshell, student newspapers aren't protected by the first amendment because they are school-sponsored and considered limited public forms of expression. Although year books aren't newspapers, they fall under the same umbrella.

So it doesn't matter what you or I or the dad or the kid thinks, because in the end it's up to the school on what to allow or not allow in the products they print.

Like I said before, I'm all about the freedom of expression. If a kid wants to take GST's suggestion and dress up in a rainbow with his two dads for the year book (hey GST, whatever floats your boat, I don't judge) more power to 'em. But all stuff like this does is make schools pull a Toby and whip out the ban hammer. Instead of letting kids be kids and enjoy some creativity with their yearbooks, the next time around it'll be vanilla bland just to avoid any confusion. If one person can't have any fun, than nobody can have any fun. It's just easier that way. Otherwise you give people choices and, well, you know the rest.

I think they knew full well they were going to stir some shit up with the picture. We've become so PC and pussified that it's bound to offend someone.

My nephew's girlfriend is some kind of teachers aide for special needs students. Some third grade special needs student threw a fit a couple weeks ago and was swinging a jump roper over his head in a "threatening manner". They locked the school down and called the cops. Not one adult on site was willing to walk up and take the rope away from 9 or 10 year old. Disgusting.

I miss the gun shows in the school gymnasium.
