Ice conditions, warm weather = shitty ice.

Recent ice related rescues from walking ice fishermen, atv's and now for the first time a little 2 seater plane went thru whilst landing on upper red lake....spendy walleye adventure.

Over 100 fishermen rescued from detached ice floe in Minnesota: Police

Over 100 fishermen were rescued Friday evening after an ice floe detached in a northern Minnesota lake, according to police.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said 122 fishermen were stranded when the ice floe detached from the main shoreline on Upper Red Lake.

Thirty feet of open water separated the ice floe from the shore, according to the sheriff's press release.

Before emergency responders arrived on the scene, a bystander attempted to assist with evacuations by a canoe.

During the rescue attempt, four people fell into the water but they were safely brought back onto the floating ice and warmed in a fishing shelter, according to police.

During the rescue, emergency responders realized some fishermen may not have been aware they were on the ice floe, so the emergency management team sent an alert with instructions of how to evacuate, it's unclear if it was county-wide.

On Thursday, Col. Rodmen Smith, director of the DNR Enforcement Division warned citizens of "unseasonably warm weather" with very few areas of the state having the ice thickness that's typical this time of year.

Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said on Thursday, "Most years, the ice would be thick enough by now for vehicles and wheelhouses, and we'd be seeing a steady procession of them heading north," he said.

"But this year isn't 'most years,' and the ice is changing constantly. It's absolutely vital that anyone who heads out checks the thickness frequently, pays close attention to the weather, and has a plan in case the worst happens and they wind up in the water."

No injuries were reported from the rescue, according to police.

Stuff happens but it seems to happen every year at red lake and this year it's been like 3 times already. Those are not good betting odds.

Agreed, these huge shallow bodies of water the ice moves and constantly moves on windy days, early freeze up expansion cracks open up and bounce slightly in the wind slowly opening up these cracks causing ice shift opening more larger cracks, this is mpo as i floated one time for 5 hours on a different large shallow body of water (mille lacs lake)one early dec day,my group walked out 2miles early one morning stepping over occasional large cracks in 8"s of lake ice, warm windy morning spittin rain as a cold front came rolling in with 20mph winds, lake started to break up,i watched huge sheets of ice over lap other ice sheets along shoreline, within minutes we had whitecaps between our group and shore, scary feeling as you u n zipped coveralls and untie your boots anticipating a morning swim,we got lucky as our ice sheet finally slid over, ontop of shore ice allowing us to walk off dry. It's always unnerving early clear ice as you walk out look down into darkness, always have the biggest guy in the group on point walking out with "spudbar"

Early ice, opening day deer, duck hunting gets ppl excited and not thinking straight.

Extreme weather: Minnesota man dies after truck falls through ice on Mille Lacs Lake

Aman was found dead floating in the waters of Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota after his truck fell through the ice on the lake Friday, authorities said.

The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office said that they received a 911 call a little before 11 a.m. on Friday about a "truck and body through the ice on Mille Lacs Lake".

The caller alerted the Mille Lacs County Dispatch about an area on the ice where a truck had gone through and said that he located the body of an adult male floating in the water. The caller said that he was "able to recover him and bring him back to shore".

"The subject found floating was wearing a flotation device," said the sheriff's department.

Authorities transported the male, identified as Richard Francis Gadbois, 80, to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
