    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

Reports from a couple buddies in NC and SC ND reporting farmers are combining like mad right now. I'm not sure how much ground they can cover between now and next Friday, but it's a good sign!!

Hockey and observations from a midlife crisis

Well, I sold my boat in October...so maybe this is how I fill the void??

From Cold Water to Hot Water?

I was also scratching my head about supposed "charges."

Hockey and observations from a midlife crisis

I haven't laced up my skates since college, and even then I only skated a few times. It's been probably 20 years since I seriously played hockey, and prior to that it was 11 years straight of practices, games and tournaments. Now at 35, I find myself back on the rink. Why? Not really sure. The...

    Snow Geese

Guy I follow on FB just had a banger hunt somewhere to the west. Shot a pile of snows, specks, Canadas and greenies.

I'm sure this will change, but has anyone ever seen 10 straight days of W to WNW wind before? It seems to always switch at some point, but if this sticks -- that's pretty odd.

You got it all wrong. It's all about technique. If you clench the sphincter just right and have the correct pressure on the cheeks, you can switch between doe bleat and buck grunt. Keeps the hands free so you don't have to let go of your rifle.

Sportsmen and women- be mindful out there. ESPECIALLY this year

^^^To reiterate that point, many of the roads that were made a hundred years ago were never intended for these monstrous machines to be on them. Tractors and equipment were much smaller back then. Now, you have umpteen-row headers on combines bigger than a two-story house, and they literally...

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

Sorry. Didn't mean to come off weird. I do appreciate the intel. Weird thing is in 20 years I've never changed tactics. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. I dunno, maybe I'm a lazy hunter. But I like walking in my 3/4 mile, sitting in the woods, and seeing what's going to happen.

Not the first year I've dealt with a lot of standing crops. Oh well. Not going to keep me at home. - - - Updated - - - And pretty sure that can be said for 90 percent of the state, lol!

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

10-day forecast is out! I'm not holding my breath those temps and wind directions won't change 10 times between now and then, but still -- seems like the deep freeze is here to stay. GOOD! Rather this than 60 degrees like we had a few years ago.

    Best Deer Hunting Snacks

I usually have a pile of homemade goose jerky (which reminds me, I need to make more) thanks to waterfowl season, so that's a go-to. Otherwise I always raid the kids' Halloween Candy. Pro tip: Unwrap the little bars ahead of time and keep them in a zip-top bag. Not nearly as noisy, and as long...

    Daylight saving time

I hate the change. We are finally to a point where you don’t have to get up at 3 am to make it to a spot in time for hunting, then the time changes and we’re f’d. Big tease if you ask me.

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

^^^Haha yup! My feelings exactly. My favorite parts about deer season are when it starts and when it stops, so we can get back to bird hunting. One weekend is all the hounds will let me shirk my duties.

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

I have to admit that I don't consider myself a big-game hunter -- more of an equal-opportunity hunter. With rifle tag in hand again, however, I can't help get excited for deer opener. It's not the same any more now that I'm alone in the woods (was a lot more fun with uncles and cousins) but...

    First Ice - Predictions

Long-term forecast certainly bodes well for ice forming. Overnights below freezing, days near or slightly above freezing. Methinks a warm front could come through in the next couple weeks (as so often happens in November) but then again if it's like last year, we might be in the freezer until April.

    Rompola Buck

Well, can you blame them? The amount of scrutiny and just plain yuckiness that can come out when a big deer is killed, especially these days with social media, is enough to make most folks want to hide under a rock.

    Rompola Buck

"My educated guess — based off of 23 years of working here at Deer & Deer Hunting — is there was something so sinister about both sides of the 1998 Rompola Buck that it had to go away, and everyone involved with it had to zip their yips and fade into the background." This would make a good...

    Snow Geese

If anyone, other than landowners or folks with explicit permission to do so, is driving into fields right now, I hope they get slapped in the forehead. We struggle enough with access and the whole posted/not posted thing, I'd hate for a year like this year when farmers are stressed enough as it...
