    Always thought that same thing until many years ago in town an old 50's something chevy pickup sitting about 15 feet from a tall pine tree. Lightning hit the tree left a trail right to the pickup tire. Blew the tire out and the engine oil dipstick almost completely out of its tube.

    The advanced fisherman will know the feel of the bottom,rocks,weeds bites etc.... with any type of rod. The ones not as advanced will not know the difference anyway.
