    No, not the same. One is a crystallization process (birdbath), hence the regular shape; the other is a depositional environment and creates the more artistic look. Interestingly, I've never seen the birdbath ice spikes before now.

    The only thing I will say with respect to hardwoods is to not go that route if you have active dogs. I put teak in a basement a number of years ago and the GSPs nails would leave grooves in the otherwise smooth finish. Not really scratch it, just leave long dings as they spun their wheels...
