    Puppies Coming

Make and ad: "Free Lab/Springer cross pups to good homes." They'll go like hotcakes!

    Snow Totals

Got probably 2 inches in my yard in N. Fargay. Shittiest part is it's all frozen and crusty now. But it'll be 40s and 50s soon. Should melt. Now for the love of God, no more rain until my leaves are up. This fall is dumb.

what's a good spur length on a turkey?

This is an excerpt from a 2011 article, but you get the gist: The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) keeps records on this sort of thing for those of us who care, and we do. For hunters who register their birds, it's a way to share trophy statistics about the gobblers we love to hunt. What...

    Anyone seeing any roosters?

So aside from planting sweet clover (which as you say, only works once in awhile) what's the solution? There's clearly a trend between suitable habitat and birds. It's the great equalizer. Mother Nature can be pretty horrendous at times, but habitat buffers her blows. The flip side is to get rid...

    Plucked mallard recipe?

My experience is that roasting wild ducks is tricky. Very, very difficult to NOT overcook and turn tough and dry. I prefer to pluck a duck, and then pan sear it in butter and oil, bacon grease or lard. You get a nice, crispy skin, and can finish medium rare. Let rest for 5 minutes when it's...

    Anyone seeing any roosters?

So you're saying...if you build it, they will come??

    Anyone seeing any roosters?

Raising and releasing penned birds as a way to support or supplement wild bird populations is a waste of money IN COMPARISON to allocating those same dollars toward habitat improvements. The problem is that raising birds is a lot cheaper for the Average Joe to do, versus setting aside tens or...

    Waterfowl Report

Took No. 1 son out on Sunday. Hit a spot that doesn't fail to at least produce a few ducks. And that's what we got! Very few birds flying. Decoyed one nice flock of mallards, otherwise it was spotty singles. Also called in a lone cackler that dropped out of the stratosphere. He was definitely...

    where did fall go???

I saw plenty of rutted roads Sunday when I was out, but seems like tractor tires doing a lot of the rutting. At least based on the tread pattern and size...

    where did fall go???

I'm planning on taking No. 1 son out Sunday for duck hunting on a little bay by some bigger water. That AM looks pleasant, albeit cold. I'll take that over this sloppy crap.

Blue platers on the rise crossing the border

I have to chuckle whenever we get on the NR train, and they come out of the woodwork to tell us how horrible we are, and how we should open ourselves to the love and appreciation of these visitors from abroad to partake in our state's fine outdoors opportunities... Puh-lease. The door swings...

Blue platers on the rise crossing the border

"Nonresident fishing license sales in North Dakota have nearly quadrupled since 1995-96, with 40 percent of the crush coming from its neighbor to the east. South Dakota, too, is enjoying a heavy influx of Minnesota anglers — all during a time of declining fishing license sales in St. Paul." The...

can someone explain the logic behind this

How in the hell did you misconstrue what I wrote as a means of asking for higher license fees?? All I'm saying is that, if you truly loving hunting and fishing, the price the state charges at it's current rate is pretty reasonable. Especially if that's all you do.

    Waterfowl Report

As much as I can commiserate, I certainly don't think the birds are completely out of the state. And to be honest, with the weather to the north, I imagine we may not have much of a "stall" this fall as in the recent past. Even if your roost got busted, you certainly aren't going to shoot...

    Waterfowl Report

I'm actually a spooner aficionado, and go great lengths to proudly display any grinner I get on top of the mallards, pinnies or whatever else I shoot. While they may have a face only a mother can love, my kiddos can't taste the difference when they're wrapped in bacon and grilled to medium-rare...

    Anyone seeing any roosters?

True...the other side is biological. If the G&F knows that the pheasants are doomed anyway, and likely will succumb to nature's wrath regardless, why not let hunters get first crack? Better than them freezing on a field line where a tree row used to be, or dying from some disease because every...

    PFTF Youth hunt

Nice work! I've hunted my last youth hunt with strangers, unfortunately. One of my pups had a near-death experience thanks to a kid who had no place in a field (and really no desire except for his dad's insistence). Going forward I'll continue to hunt my own kids and any friends' kids who want...

    Anyone seeing any roosters?

You guys probably don't want to hear this, but I've been out duck and goose hunting four times this fall, and every single time we've heard and/or seen pheasants (roosters and hens) while afield. On duck opener we kicked up six hens and a rooster in the tiniest WPA known to man while looking for...

    Waterfowl Report

I think I have a new regular season stretch goal. Somehow muster the courage and personal fortitude to wind up with the North Dakota Trash Stash Limit Pic: 15 coots, 5 mergies, and 6 spoonies! I'm pretty sure anyone who manages that feat gets automatic PRO HUNTER STATUS.
