The RIGHT way to clean pike

I'm drawing a line in the sand because I'm sick of seeing the "wrong" way to clean pikes and get boneless fillets. AKA, Exhibit A: This way just pisses me right the hell off. One, the claim that the "backstap" from the first cut is boneless is complete BS. It's full of cartilage and the ends...

    Clam Outdoors Customer Service

Now I'm pissed I asked for, and received, a new pair of Clam mitts for Christmas to replace the worn ones from less than a year ago. Well, now I know for next year...

    more weather

I'm supposed to be on Red Lake in a sleeper house Jan. 13-15, so I fully expect subzero temperatures, howling wind and feet of snow. It's only fitting.

    Coming Upon Winter Kill

Now that we're having a "normal" winter again, we'll finally get a good assessment of what all that reduced habitat means for deer and upland game numbers. We've been living on borrowed time with three mild winters in a row. This was inevitable. Sucky...but inevitable.

    Lamest Walleye Advice Ever

The surest way to raise an Ice Pirate's Jolly Roger is to tell him there are no walleyes in a particular lake. Well played.

    Lamest Walleye Advice Ever

Actually, I seldom travel more than an hour and a half one way for birds. Most of the time I'm inside an hour. But I know what you mean.

    Lamest Walleye Advice Ever

Waaaaay ahead of you. That's Ice Pirating 101. I've been tracking Ahab for years, however he hasn't hit any of the lakes I want to fish. But if I stretch my legs a bit and head his direction, I have plenty of waypoints at the ready. :;:muahaha - - - Updated - - - There's a spot on a lake I...

Smelt...thawed ahead of time. On a quick-strike rig. Hands down.

    Lamest Walleye Advice Ever

I'm trying to up my walleye game in hopes of having greater success with Son No. 1 this winter. So, I do what comes natural, which is to turn to the interweb and start googling "How To Ice Fish Walleyes." Most of it is same-old, same-old. I've fished walleyes my whole life, so I'm not a...

    Fish House Break In

This exactly. My grandpa used to have a spear shack. Tiny thing. Built it himself. It was tipped over decades ago and a bunch of his stuff was stolen, including a dozen or so hand-carved spearing decoys my great grandfather made. Since then, he took everything with him to and from the shack...

Well this is going to get interesting

When this is finally over and the rats have jumped ship, I hope they just torch the place. Cleanse the North Dakota ground of whatever is left behind.

    Brewer lake (cass co.)

This is a big reason I'll never invest in a permanent. The beauty is in the fact you can leave it on the ice. But break-ins happen constantly. Just easier to bring a portable out and home every time. No worries about someone wrecking it and stealing all your crap. Such a shame. I'd love to...

    Have you ever?

Never at work. Got the stomach flu last week and trusted a fart a bit too much while I was puking my guts out. Straight to the trash with those undies.

    I need expert advice

I brought my son out last year at 2. He was kept entertained by a bucket of minnows even on a slow day. This year I hope to repeat the process, but we're bringing a tablet along in case squirmy minnows don't cut the mustard any more. I'm not sure what 11 year olds are interested in. They...

    Helping the deer herd

I know a certain shelter belt with nothing but stunted spruce that, at this time of year, will have about one deer per tree when the cold and weather gets rough. They love those things.

    Carp fishing

I had a high school buddy who bowfished/speared them during the hard water season. Would cut a big hole in the shallows and wait for them to cruise through. He'd figure out their travel corridors and stack them up. Great fun in the winter.

    Ice Fishin Poles & Reels

I tried that once. Got lazy. I got everything spooled up just so and then never used the spare spools. Just easier to have a panfish rod, walleye rod, etc., then get a versatile setup with the thought of swapping spools. For what it's worth, the "perch" rod I use is an equal opportunity popper...
