    Migration

I follow the "hunting reports" that Ducks Unlimited posts with a certain trepidation. It's open access, so anyone can post. Lots of folks saying birds are nonexistent now in ND, but there's the odd duck who is having luck. But regardless, I can't kill them on the couch. Will be sitting in a...

    Older Coleman Stoves.

    Isn't propane pressurized...?

    It's getting better out there

That, plus phez season is in full swing and it's one week closer to deer opener. All signs point to "POSTED."

    It's getting better out there

Don't bother field hunting because ever pit and puddle is going to be pounded at first light. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

You guys ever eat road kill?

I crockpotted 7 pheasant breasts yesterday and then shredded the meat. Half was used to make enchiladas, and the rest is for whatever. My 2-year-old isn't keen on spicy food (can't blame him) but he had seconds and thirds of the shredded pheasant. Made me one proud papa.

How thick do you like the ice to be before you start walking out and fishing?

I don't have the ice fishing sickness like some folks, so I tend to wait until there's 8 inches or more. Just a mental thing. I always hear horror stories about freak thin ice, so the way I figure it, the more ice in general, the last chance of hitting those off-chance thin areas.

    Rut

I'm not dissuading the relevancy of the term, just the fact that the speaker stated it was a tough time to hunt bucks because they wouldn't travel far. As I said, in most states or on private land that's probably applicable. In North Dakota where hunters get antsy immediately and are doing...

    Rut

"Lockdown" is hilarious. Probably applicable in some areas, but not where I'm at. At 12:01 the pushers start (only reason I know is because I start seeing deer about 15 minutes later) and anything "Locked down" is going to bust loose and head for the hills...or they'll be dead.

    It's getting better out there

That's because they're dry as a popcorn fart. Good freeze coming tonight. Low in the 20s. Should be interesting to see what ducks are at my honey hole slough come Sunday morning.

    Dog Allergies

My GWP had chronic ear infections on Purina Pro Plan. Switched to NutriSource high performance and they cleared up. He'll still get the occasional one, usually right after the first hunt or two of the season, but the are much more infrequent now. Before switching, he was getting an ear infection...

Why UND is better than NDSU

I endorse you doing this 100 percent. Let us know how it turns out.

    It's getting better out there

Good to see. Been hearing lots of grumblings about how the big wind blew all the locals out, but I have my suspicions there are more to take their place...

    Rut

Every year, without exception, there is rut signs in the woods we hunt. The activity is what varies. Some years the bucks are dumb as bricks. Other years they are on high alert. I think it correlates to temperature just as much as all the other factors.

You guys ever eat road kill?

When I was a wee lad (16 or so) I got my dream/nightmare job working retail for Gander Mountain. Other than getting a few deals here and there, I retained zero practical skills other than earning a bit more respect for the more schmucks behind the counter, and retail managers all have...

    Rifle Season 2015

I hunt with four other guys, and for the first time since 2002 we all pulled rifle tags...and not a single one was buck. No big deal, I just know we'll see a ton of bucks this year now. Murphy's Law. I did grab a bow tag just in case some Slobasaurus Rex meanders past my spot after the...

Seeing shot patterns... which choke is "best"?

I shut a Patternmaster something or other that I'm sure is somewhere on the full spectrum. It's probably ALL mental, but for some darn reason I shoot way better with that then factory chokes.

To shave or not to shave... that is the ?

I have a slick GWP that needs no grooming, as well as a more wirey GWP. The latter gets a buzz in the summer, but I like it full and thick in the cooler months. We'll battle a few cockle burrs knowing I can hunt him all day in subzero temps.

    Jamestown gun range going byebye

There's a perfect argument why free-for-all ranges are going the way of the do-do. People who pay for range use tend to want to keep their home turf nice. Usually, anyway...

    Pheasant Recipes

Honestly? Ground pheasant leg burgers. No guff. You get a TON of meat off the legs, and grinding them is the easiest way (IMHO) to get all those darn tendons out. What I do is get the legs off like you normally would with a game bird, then spend a second or two snagging the easiest tendons...

    Rifle Season 2015

That's the beautiful benefits of so much phez habitat. The deer like it, too! Kind of like how Nodak used to be before we started hemorrhaging CRP acres.
