    Pheasants and bugs

so first off must make it clear that I am not a big die hard pheasant hunter but given the opportunity on a large number of birds in a small amount of cover I like anybody else will dive in on that and enjoy it thoroughly. More so than anything I just like seeing a whole lot of them around...

    So whats the rule

Talking to a buddy last night we got to talking about deer that coyotes get to first. If your able to find the deer but there is no longer anything left save bones and hide do you legally have to tag it. Now if it's a buck and you keep the rack or anything for that matter you definitely do but...

    Cool birds

For the past week now these three have been hanging out south east of town near the gun range. Even though I've gone by them on multiple occasion I still end up stopping to watch them almost every time. I'm little surprised as long as they have been in one spot that the bird watchers haven't...

Specklebelly migration in South Central North Dakota or anywhere for that matter

Well we here down along the Missouri River in Central North Dakota have always had at least some specklebelly show up in any given fall but most years it was normally just a few here and there with the occasional year popping up where they became at the very least a bit more common. But perhaps...

    McKenzie slough

Does anyone know the story of the main body of the south end of the marsh? It's always been privet but generally open till a few years ago when it got locked up and has been hunted relatively heavily by what appears to be the same group with the same boat who also now have a permanent blind set...

Will oahe set a new record high water level

Well with only about a foot and a half to go looks like she's going to give it a run. Record is 1619.7 she's currently at 1618.3 and with 65,000 coming in and only 29,000 going out with a .2 rise yesterday. The record before 2011 was set in 97 at 1618.7 so that looks to be an easy mark to reach...

    Cold water and clouds

Interesting how big of an affect the cold water in the Lakes has when you get convective Cloud development like yesterday. Even some of the smaller Lakes like horse head seemed to have a fairly substantial effect.

    Winter kill

So any of you guys who have made it our recently seen any signs of it? The way the game and fish is talking it sounds like it's going to be pretty severe and a lot of lakes are going to be dead or at least partially dead but they're still kind of dancing around it for now.

    River is open....Well sort of!

Well can't say I've seen this before but the river south of Bismarck has broke open before it did in town. Must have happened during the night and it was definitely still locked up a little Hart at sundown but would guess she will be pretty much clear by the end of the weekend. Not that it...

    Open water fishing perch lakes

Has anyone ever tried going back to one of the random jumbo perch lakes/sloughs that pop up each winter in open water season? Thinking about trying it for kick and giggles this spring after ice out.

So are we going to set the record?

Jan 18th is the latest freeze up on Sakakawea and by the looks of the lake and the forecast the record looks most definitely within range! Almost have to wonder if she's going to freeze it all along with majority of the river.

So did fishing buddy finally kick the bucket?

Went over there to check the river gauge height and either they're having a major technical difficulty or they finally pulled the plug. They've been getting like one post a month so the latter seems quite possible.

    Late plant early harvest

So the crops went in decently late this year but somehow are magically coming off early how in the hell does that work. Wasn't to surprised to see the corn coming off but can't say I remember seeing flowers coming off in mid September before.

Crazy way to make a living!

When I spotted these two guys standing on the power line working on it I took a few pictures cuz I thought that was crazy enough! And then moments later another helicopter shows up traveling at probably 70 miles an hour with another piece of equipment and two more guys hanging 100 feet below it...

Well for anyone hunting 3f2 or any where in any state shaded in gray on this map it's now illegal to transport the head of any deer or elk pretty much anywhere in or into ND even to a taxidermist or meat market. It means your going to have to either cape out your deer in the field bring a saw...
