A dependable high MPG used car

What highways will the vehicle be driven on? There’s an enormous difference in MPG on a road w/65 MPH limit and one w/80MPH limit. It’s not uncommon for MPG to be +/- 5-7 between 65 and 80.

I regularly make 150-250Mi runs on ‘94 in ND and MN as well as ‘29 and ‘2 @ same speeds. 75MPH vs. 85 MPH I reliably see 4-6MPG diff. That’s been pretty consistent over multiple mid-ish sized AWD SUV’s.

AWD SUV and 25+ MPG @ 80MPH on ND/SD/MT interstates is a pretty tall order. If the roads you drive regularly are 65 or 70MPH 25MPG is very “doable” with multiple rigs.

As mentioned above Subaru Outback or Forester should check all your boxes. Finding one that’s in your budget and doesn’t need another $2500 worth of wear and maint. Work will be your challenge.
