Thanks guys - now THAT's the spirit! I'm surprised someone hasn't welded up a custom grill to fit or something....

So far I think that flipping the original protective grate upside down and wiring it to the handle seems like the route I'll continue to use unless I get ambitious and decide to design something else.

Anyone use the heat powered stove fans on top to spread heat in the shack? I bought one this year and it works well....silent, no batteries, easy to mod and install.

dam i had one that quit working on my wood stove, but i took it apart to see what made the thing work

It generates it own electricity through a difference in temperature through the thermal electric motor, but really i saw a small electric motor with 2 wires coming out of it.

for real?

very real, cousin got hospitalized for it. Granted it was welding galvanized steel in an enclosed building. i used to do a bit of that welding and I would hold my breath under the mask, make weld weld, flip up and exhale hard to clear the fumes away. Always made me nervous, I suspect many people don't even know about that hazard.

From what I can tell it is actual magic.

I was fascinated with Stirling engines in my younger days because of the magic. I was thinking maybe that's what was in those fans. I have one that's pretty old made by Phoenix that I bought second hand 40 some years ago and it was old then. They run off heat differential too but pure mechanical with no electrical components. Lots of ways to build them out of junk .

for real?

Yes. About 30 years ago I picked up one of those huge military ammo cans. I was using a torch to cut out the cross pieces. An experienced welder stopped me, but I was already nearly done. I think I inhaled a lot of that crap. I talked with my doctor about it. Maybe I have an excuse for my bad memory. What sucks about getting old is you forget what you want to remember, but you remember what you would just as soon forget.

Can anyone relate to that?

Modify an old grill or basket grill like in the video I posted.

Has anyone tried grilling hot dogs on just a Buddy heater? Wondering if it heats well enough to do this. Probably would.
