Not that great of a mystery, happens often in nature. Larger more aggressive species outcompetes its nearest relatives and takes over. Same thing happened to our lost humanoid ancestors...

Good find Sven. Blue walleye population crashed in early 50's after a big high pressure system sat on Lake Erie for a week with very high temps causing the lake bottom to go anoxic. Commercial harvesting of this fish exacerbated the problem (it was more popular table fare than yellow walleye or perch at the time). In cooler months it was caught along the shoreline. I remember catching a few early season silvery walleye but not blue in color.

This was caused by overharvest Sheldon.

my two older brothers called me “humanoid head” when we were little

it still hurts
I have an ornery little niece who loves banter: "Abnormal", "weirdo", "obtuse" and "fruitcake" get tossed around a lot when we're together. Thank you for "humanoid head". Your pain again provides amusement. Your brothers are likely the whole of all butts.

OT: Are the "greenies" of Winnipeg genetically unique or the product of the environment?

they have had plenty of time to recover since the population decline, remember a couple fish can produce literally millions of offspring. If they havent recovered, its not because of overharvest...
