Coyote bullet

Got the thermal on the way now need to load up some bullets. This will be 150 yds and in. Right now I have 73grn vmax, 60 grn vmax, 40 grn vmax , Hornady 55 grn sp, 45 grn Speer spitzer, and Winchester 55 grn sp, sierra 55 grn spitzer all in the reloading room. What would be the pick of the guys who have killed a bunch? It will be shot out of 16” ar

There all going to kill a Coyote. It just depends on the twist and what bullet your rifle likes. But I like 55 gr Sierra also.

It’s a 1-8 twist. It’s an ar that I won a cheap one so I’m not expecting anything but minute of coyote. 150-200 max and in.

In my 223 bolt gun I have typically ran 50gr v-max and have never had any issues. But then again outside of some factory loaded stuff for target practice all I have ever used for varmint and vermin is the v-max.

Very interesting. I keep trying different things. Years ago it was 55g Hornasy SX, then Ballistic tip, then 6.5 Creed with 143 ELD-X. This year I picked up 500 of the 6.5 ELD-VT. I think Ill try them in the 6.5 Creed for daytime, and the short little 16 inch 6.5 Grendel with the thermal.

Hard to beat any of your 55’s. Take your pick. Growing up I shot everything smaller than deer w/a 223 and whatever 55gn Cannelure SP was the very cheapest in bulk. Win, REM, and/Hornady. They’re probably gonna exit. If they exit ahead of the “paunch”, you won’t see a lot of damage. If they exit the paunch, it’ll be UGLY, just like every other projectile that exits that spot is.

I got some of the 6.5 VT's waiting to get loaded for my Creedmoor. Bought a box of factory VT Grendel and have only shot a few at steel with a few. Here is an article and video that was interesting

Had a buddy shoot a coyote with a 140 or 147 ELD-M a couple years ago with thermal and they tracked it for quite aways and never recovered it.
Recently made some changes to my Creedmoor, feel like I put lipstick on a pig but the thing shot great out to 350yds last year in the off the shelf configuration

While deer hunting about 10 years ago wife and I stopped to open gate going into the government pasture and there was a yote about 50 yards away setting on a badger mound. Reached into the back seat of our s-10 and grabbed my 300 win-mag and gave old yote a 150 grain blue box special. Wife said that mr. yote went 20 ft side ways. I walked up to him and it didnt look to bad until I rolled him over. Not sure where that other side went but it was GONE. For the price of fur now days that is what I would use so that you dont even have to think about picking them up. LB

I've killed a pile with the 53 v-max, so I have no doubts the 60 would work well.

However, one thing you should consider is that "minute of coyote" with a daytime optic is not the same as MOC with a thermal. You're using basically a 3x-ish optic to shoot to 150-200 yards, likely off a tripod, maybe even standing. Precision tends to suffer, so the age-old advice is certainly true here as well: use whichever bullet shoots the best.

If one is shooting a 223/Wylde/5.56, at least 1:8, and tied to a magazine @ 2.26", the 53 V-Max is pretty much the most BC and Velocity one it going to be able to tie together within those confines. @ 16", ~3100fps is about all you're gonna get. @ 20" and longer, 3300-3350ish.

If a person has several 223's and maybe a few are 1:12-1:14 twist, 53 V-Max's probably aren't your best choice unless you're OK loading multiple projectiles for multiple rifles. The 50 V-Max and/or 55gn Soft-point are both excellent "do-all" choices if one is trying to have 1 load for multiple rifles with twist rates from "fast" to "standard".

I don't think I've ever used the 55 Sierra but if 'Bucks and 'Dogs are OK w/them, I'd have 0 issue giving them a whirl too.
