BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - State budget bills can be packed with different items and dollar values. House lawmakers spent several hours over the past two days discussing the State Department of Commerce budget and its various sections. While the bill covers things such as tourism and workforce development programs, lawmakers clashed on items, including providing an additional $50 million towards the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. It would go towards operational expenses and must be privately matched by the organization. “I think it’s a really generous gift and one we don’t take lightly using taxpayer dollars here, and we want to make sure we’re doing best by it,” said Matt Briney, chief communications and marketing officer for the library. The bill also calls for $16 million to be used towards replacing state-owned, Chinese-built drones with ones built in America or other allied countries. It comes after a standalone bill calling for this failed in the Senate. Supporters say it’s a matter of national security. “It’s important that we pass this because if Washington D.C. comes out, which they may next fall, and ban all DJI drones from here on out, it would be very tough to find replacements because there would be a run on the manufacturers,” said Rep. Mike Nathe, R-Bismarck. The bill will be hashed out by a conference committee. Opponents of the bill say they’re concerned this bill may violate the state’s single-subject laws.
