Anyone have troubles with reverse going out ? My 08 F-150 transmission lost reverse again , 2nd time in 3 years and I baby it. Always let it idle till cab is warm and take off slow when it's cold out. Iv'e driven 4x4s since the 70's and abused them and never had a problem . Now I get older and wiser and less abusive to my vehicles and problems occur. I have an 04 one ton that's been used and abused and it's been bulletproof . Might have to go back to a Chevy or just drive my 04.

Just one of the many wonder of mysteries of mechanics that will never be explained. One vehicle you can run the hell out of it and its keeps ticking, take another, drive it 10 feet down the road it breaks on ya, always something that racks the brain.
Just might be the case that this transmission is just not right no matter how many times you fix or replace the same part.

Samething happened to my 2006. My Son was pulling a suburban onto a trailer in reverse and that's all it took. I had all forward gears just no reverse. A1 Automotive in Moorhead fixed mine. Three year warranty and 3800.00 to fix.

Chevy had tranny issues - couldnt build one so they both Ford and Chevy built one and it still has issues. Dodge they have set the number of miles their tranny goes.

What am i missing --- TOYOTA never heard of a tranny issue. However with the new ones who knows.

Bottom line - is govt needs to back off on regulation period. Will we see a change with trump doubt it its been going on for years. 10 speeds, turbos, cylinder deactivation (grrrrr),

I've heard rumors the new model year for the 4Runners have had transmission problems. This year was a complete makeover on the 4Runner, all new engine/drivetrain as it was advertised.

I HATE new model year vehicles.

I'm also guessing there's something amiss in that transmission that is not getting replaced and it's leading to the loss of reverse. Not a transmission mechanic here, but there's no excuse for that kind of repeat failure. I've put well over 600k miles on Ford pickups through the years, and the only Ford pickup transmission I've ever had to have fixed was a 5-speed manual in a 1992 truck that needed its synchronizer gears replaced when I bought it.

I say that and my BIL needs a new transmission in his 2017(?) F150 with a little over 80k on it. Not cheap, between that and a few other issues (leaking turbo and some other stuff) and he was looking at a $17k repair bill. I think the tranny was either $10k or $14k, I don't remember offhand. This is through the Ford shop in Minot.

Just curious here, but since we are talking about 16-18 year old pickups, how many miles are on these two with tranny issues?

About 600K between 7 Ford pickups. Only transmission work was a rebuild @ ~175K on my '95 1/2tn 5-spd manual. Current '11 F-250 is @ 242K w/0 issues so far.

I’ve got an 07’ expedition that was starting to slip in the lower gears this summer. Bought a quart of the anti-slip transmission juice Ive used before on other vehicles and come to find out there is no dipstick or access to it from under the hood. Apparently it has a closed system and the only way to access it is a small nipple under the engine and on top of transmission you cant physically pour a bottle into. I never did put anything in and since the weather has gotten colder the slipping stopped

I've noticed any vehical i play in(abuse the piss out of) never has a problem. As soon as I baby a vehical all issues pop up.

But it's probably a valve body or seliniod issue. The reverse shift your usually at a stop so a issue is less noticeable than 1-2 or so on.

Just curious here, but since we are talking about 16-18 year old pickups, how many miles are on these two with tranny issues?

08 f-150 reverse went out at 112K in Dec. 2021 replaced with rebuilt tranny and reverse went out again Dec. 2024 @ 120K Almost all highway miles and some easy miles around the farm.

04 F-350 diesel 170K has been worked hard all it's life. 1st owner used it to pull camper trailers from Indiana to west coast I used it to haul equipment on 40' trailer . No problems whatsoever.

Who did the rebuild? Only getting 8k miles seems as though something may have been overlooked.

I ordered from Jegs, they called it a performance transmission. I called Jegs yesterday and talked to a technician, he was puzzled as there are no known weak spots with reverse gear. The price was good $1847.88 delivered and no core needed so I have the old one and now this one still in the pickup. Going to tear them both down and see if I can find what went wrong.

I drove it around the yard a few times today and now the forward gears feel spongy , not hooking up like they should. My guess is there is shrapnel floating around in there.

Wonder if the speed sensor is out..does it throw any codes? Bad seal in reverse clutch...seems very low miles for either though....
