Set the drag correctly and leave it ALONE. Adjusting during the fight is a perfect way to enlarge the "hole"; give leverage through over torqueing or through inadvertent friction via finger contact: AND "pop": Set it "right" (2lbsish under line strength--3lbish under the diameter of braid--the drag should slip a bit during hook set--3lb"ish" for straight braid).

Cup/thumb the spool for more. If it's too tight, "flyrod" it here by stripping with the off hand. Good luck: The initial (microsecond) line grab is good for a "pop". I learned this from targeting carp in the Hills with an UL UglyStick, Mitchell 308, 8lb Trilene XL and 18 cent crappie jigs from K-Mart (1/8oz) sold at the counter. The short fad at the time was torqueing the drag and "back reeling". IME/O, the tedium is only good for an "audience": Like the time I "bill snagged" a paddlefish on a Rap on the East Beach of the Tailrace...It got old. It got old. It got old: I won--pliers and flashlight--sadly no photos.

I learned all this shit from Al Linder, Virgil Ward, Babe Winkelman, Orlando Wilson, Jimmy Houston, Roland Martin and Bill Dance. Jimmy should be kicked directly in the ass for kissing fish.

Thank you for reading. I hope you've enjoyed the prattling. That is all:
