I’ve been fishing with family/friends. And had no problem with the ice. But now I’m going out on my own and the the ice seems so intimidating especially when you step on it and it pops right away. Any tips?

I’ve been on new John’s because I’ve seen people on it but just am nervous to go on a lake that I can’t see any tracks or wholes on

Maybe continue to check depth? That might give you some piece of mind knowing the depth as you walk out. It also might help to wear a good float suit and ice picks.

How are you planning on getting on the ice? Walking, four wheeler, vehicle? That changes the approach. There was 10" of ice on those canal lakes last weekend so I'm assuming they are closer to 12" now. Drill some test holes on the way to your spot and check ice periodically.

Yup just test it before you go into water over your head, and beware of ridges.

from the days of duck hunting and cracking ice with the butt of a guys shotgun---- i have to say i was shocked how little of ice cover that one can walk on.

At the same time though --- these guys showing ice castles on facebook on area lakes when they are pictures from a prior year -- I dont get it why they post stuff like that.

Walking with a 12 ft 2x4 always reassured me when it was thin. I did see a van back in the day with utility poles chained to the front and rear bumpers out on the ice. I'm guessing that was his blanky. Find yours and go with it.

On virgin ice, I do have my ice picks and when walking or driving atv, I have my throwable flotation device from the boat on my arm. Have float coat also. Know they aren't 100% without the bibs
