My daughter and I were at the cabin Thursday evening through Monday evening, for the Memorial Day weekend. We decided against going to New Town, and instead stayed in the Van Hook Arm area. On Friday, we scouted the Shell Creek area. We caught a few nice walleye in 1-4 fow, and a pile of big smallmouth bass. My boat had electronics problems on this trip, which I would later diagnose as my transducer going bad.
Saturday was mostly spent running back home for tools, then dodging rain while I fixed the issue. Luckily I had a spare transducer.
On Sunday, my daughter, along with my cousin and his son, decided to run up river a little ways, to see what we could get into. We fished the Joes Bay area and ended up having a nice day, catching post spawn males. We tried like hell to have a day of pitching jigs into shallow water, but for whatever reason dragging a jig tipped with a minnow, or dragging a plain lindy was the better producer on this trip. This time we found fish in 1-5 fow, but also in 15-18 fow. Afterwards, we caught wind that some of our friends were having luck in the arm, and catching a better quality fish.
On Monday, Micah and I went out in the morning for a quick trip, before heading home. We were going to check a couple of the island shorelines, but ended up finding fish at the first one we tried. I pitched jigs shallow, while also dragging a lindy. Micah ran a lindy as well, and to my joy, she caught the biggest fish of the day. We spent this morning in less than 10 fow.
The water temps in the Van Hook area varied from the mid 50's to the low 60's. The water is still a little bit stained, but that should start to clean up. I would expect for that area to be very good by this upcoming weekend. Get out there and enjoy it!
