I have a few hours tomorrow (May 5th) available to take a handful of kids out fishing. With the wind forecast, I was thinking of taking them up to New John's.

Anyone know if there are any active fish there this time of the year? It's a bit earlier in the year than I've ever open water fished it before, so I'm not sure if it would be a waste of their time. It'd be really nice to get the kids onto a few fish.

Is it entirely free of ice yet?

Plenty of fish to catch there, but the keepers are in question. Go there before the massive amount of weeds & algae bloom!

I would have to imagine she's ice free by now.

I'll be in the area tonight, I will have to do a drive-by.

I would try the bays off the channel between east park and heckers. water warms quicker in them and I have had descent luck casting jigs and paddle tails around for a mixed bag with some bigger walleyes possible. please post report, I have been thinking of heading up there soon.

LOL, it is after all, the only place I've ever caught one.

Stopped out there this evening and tossed a shallow running crank around at a lot of the south shore on East Park, Heckers, and New Johns.. No hits, no follows, only a few weeds.

Also talked to about half the people out fishing and it sounded really slow. A pike here and there, a few bass, and that's about it.

I guess it's only been ice free now for a couple of days. Man alive if that water isn't clear on East Park, Heckers, and northern New Johns. It gets a slight bit murkier on the southeast end of the lake, but it was beautifully clear for the most part.

I think I'll go south tomorrow.
