Took the daughters to a Youth Pheasant hunt put on by Richland County Pheasant Inc/Richland County Wildlife Club. Met and talked to some great people, good dogs and I believe 15 kids total (my daughters were the only girls) I believe 46-48 roosters were brought in. They get the kids hands on with all the cleaning and various methods, the daughters really enjoyed getting hands on.
Sunday I took a buddy and his 15yr old step son that I have recently got to know with my dogs around home. First push was stuff on our farm I have never hunted much but due to the zero water in the old beaver damn areas, the wind and the right people we gave it a go. Got lots of hens and a few roosters up, missed getting my safety on and they lobbed a shot. 3rd spot was a newer PLOTS area and the dogs finally got a rooster up and they both put a shot on it, good thing for the dogs because it could still run and they ended up finding it. It was the young mans first time behind dogs and he did great following my instructions on watching what they were doing, it was his first pheasant ever so that was fun.
Pretty soon I won't even have to carry a gun, I can just carry extra shells and run the dogs and that would be ok with me most days

I was stuck in Minnesota for opening weekend , but snuck out for a few hours to make the most of it.

Sent a 1/2 ton of lead at them over my life. Never connected: Shot a damn WOODCOCK IN WV while hunting rabbit--WTH?!! This is a great pic and seemingly a "White Whale" to me. These birds make me consider fly fishing same as ring neck.

FUN ANECDOTE: Back in the day; back in the Hills: "We" grew up hearing our grandads, dads and uncles referring to these birds as "pheasant": We followed behind our idols after squirrel and occasionally got shocked by a flush/speed of shot/noise/dead bird.

MY first experience was a flushed turkey in the evening after we crested a ridge in beech. Others had experiences in cherry; deep enough to stain their boots. We got subscriptions to FS/OL and were educated. We were "smart ass" for saying "grouse".

I wonder how/why ruffs weren't monikered "partridge" (North) or "quail" (South): It was an isolated region: Our cousins tend to have hot attributes. It didn't make us communist like in Maine.

That is all.
