They work well in the spring, when they are on scavenge mode. You would think it would take a huge pike to swallow one of those, but a five pounder eats them without any problem. Sometimes I think location and presentations  is more key than the bait. Sometimes hanging them high off drop offs, sometimes throwing bait out without weight on the bottom. I have made some zero rigs with marabo hair to puff up the smelts profile, it seams to help when they are hungry, but on a more finicky day they will not touch them.</p></blockquote><p></p>
