Most fun i ever had at softball was when i started playing old pro. Took the game way too serious before that and just had a blast after going old pro.

johnny try hard's as we used to call them. played for about 15 years to long, the rivets fell out of my LUND knee brace and my right shoulder grinds like an old zebco lol. Man did we love to beat those guys, otherwise we were there for the hydraulic sandwiches and b.s.

Agreed Old Pro is a blast. I will going on my 3rd year at the state tourney. Its competitive as heck but in the end you dont have the young pups screaming at each other when someone doesnt catch a ball or get a hit.

I still play. Somehow I got talked into playing full time on 1 team and part time on another (50+) this year. Seemed like 50 was the right time to go from 1 night to 2 nights. My brain is writing checks my body can't cash.

PS - will be at McQuades, 35+, 40+ and Masters State, legs willing.

I used to play on two different teams until I got a job that took me out of town all week every week. After a 4 year break I was asked to be on a team while I was working in Williston. I had to take too many Aleve and drink a lot of booze before I could play, just so I could slightly numb my shoulder. Turns out that when old guys tell you that you will pay when you get older for the shit you do when you are young is spot on. Pitching my entire life through high school and legion ball and throwing javelin in high school really did a number on my shoulder. I knew it was time to hang it up or get surgery. Hanging it up is much cheaper it turns out. I'm 34 and had to hang it up before I turned 30. Sucks when you realize you can't do some of the things that you used to do and not think twice about. I do play drunken wiffle ball twice a summer and have for over a decade with a bunch of old high school buddies, so I destroy my liver twice a summer that say instead.

I used to pitch and quit when I took a line drive off of one of those "fancy new aluminum" bats. I tried jumping to get out of the way and still it went off the inside calf of my right leg....it swelled up looking all deep purple/red and I had a lump there for a couple weeks.....I figured it was time to be done and I was 35 at the time. Glad that didn't get me in the "nads" or off the face.....my reaction time was pretty good and I still couldn't get a glove on that ball it was coming so damn fast off that bat.
Had another friend that pitched and did take one of those right to the groin...he swelled up like 2 grapefruits and was pissing blood....after a trip to ER to get checked out he was going to be OK down there....but oh man for painful....just comes a point when its not worth the risk.

When I did a lot of hanging drywall, had these young guys that would come to work on Monday, after a weekend of softball, beat up from sliding into 3rd with shorts on and hung over from way to much beer fun. It would take until Wed. before they could hold up their end at work, just in time for a Wed night game. Finely sat them down and said softball or being paid for work, their choice, cause I was not paying them top dollar to heal up from having fun.

I play Mondays and Wednesdays in Moorhead, will occasionally get picked up other nights too...No tournaments anymore, just enjoy fishing too much to burn every weekend on softball.

i hung it up like 20 years (maybe a little less) ago now. and i'm only 42. it tore my shoulder up. admittedly, i already had problems from tossing the pigskin over the mountain too many times. but, failure to warm up good enough before trying to throw folks out at home from the other side of the center field fence is bad mmmkkayy. anyway, i don't miss it one bit. i was never one who was able to play half assed. i was constantly sliding into base (with pants on at least), running full tilt into the wall, etc... i am convinced i couldn't have quit too soon. another year and i would probably be in a wheel chair. 20 years later and my shoulder is still not the same. besides losing 35 pounds this spring, i think its best decision i ever made for my physical well being.
