I have an old Snowlander 520 snowblower that I picked up some 4 or 5 years ago. has worked well till this year. I am battling finding a gear box that I can replace the old one with. The one that is on it now has a 1.5 in keyed shaft to the tractor and then it looks like 1000rpm spline with a 1 3/8" shaft.

The issue that I know I have is that the keyed shaft split. When I bought it, the key on the PTO and shaft were so mashed up that I drilled through the keyed shaft and placed a 3/8 grade 8 bolt through it. It work till this winter with me only shearing a bolt this year. The last week it appears the part of the shaft next to the key chunked out. I think I can through another bolt in it for now and get by, but would like to be able to replace it at some point.

Anyone able to help with companies that make these gear boxes?

I have checked TSC, fleet farm, MACs, granger, northern tool, and general google searches.

If it were me I would call around to a few welding and machine shops and ask them if they can do it. I know a lot of them out here in western ND that would take that on.

Take it to a local machine shop, they'll have all the machines/tools needed to fix that

Mckee ? Is there a tag or factory stamp on the gearbox ? That or throw out the Model # and can do a quick search. If it's an older unit there is a chance you could cross reference and find it's a common gearbox and not bad priced. Might be money ahead to replace it .

Just got it pulled out. It reads Durst A11. And I messed up and forgot the 3rd axle.

Motion Industries in Fargo would be a place to look, I think they may have place in Bismarck as well.

However, if you find yourself with a shear bolt setup again, I'd stay away from using grade 8 bolts. Shear bolts are grade 2, using an 8 is probably what cost you the shaft.

You never did respond if it's a McKee "Snowlander", If it is Mckee they were also painted green and sold as John Deere snowblowers so I'd check with JD . If it looks like this call JD and get a price quote .

the grade 8 bolt was not intended for a shear pin. further up the PTO shaft there are 2 grade 2 bolts for that.

Good luck in your search, I am of no help with finding a new gear box.

However, if you find yourself with a shear bolt setup again, I'd stay away from using grade 8 bolts. Shear bolts are grade 2, using an 8 is probably what cost you the shaft.

Yes it is a McKee Snowlander. Stopped by the JD dealer this morning. They indicated it was similar to the JD 270. Almost everything has been discontinued. About the only thing I was able to get them were bearings. Even the seals were obsolete.

You never did respond if it's a McKee "Snowlander", If it is Mckee they were also painted green and sold as John Deere snowblowers so I'd check with JD . If it looks like this call JD and get a price quote .

I’d look into a new gearbox that can be retrofitted to the rest of the snowblower if that is a cost effective option. IME, a guy pays premium money for parts no longer manufactured, and if it breaks again, you will be looking for a needle in a haystack all over again. Other option depending on costs would be to live and learn and move on to a newer one.

As mentioned before, if it was me, I would open up the case, take out the shaft and take it to machine shop. Just make sure you mark the gears before you take off the c clips,which I am guessing hold the gears in place.

Well talked to my wife about the options and ended up picking up a welder and welded it myself. Could have been better but all in all did a decent job and think it will hold well. (Beveled the edges cleaned it up, welded it then added a bar in the old key sold and welded it closed for reinforcement.)

Ah, glad it worked out for ya.

Now that you have a welder, if the gearbox goes out again...you can put just about any old gear box in there. :cool:
