We did well at Van Hook this past weekend. Fished the north end of the Van Hook arm Friday through Sunday morning. We didn't quite catch a limit of keepable walleyes either Friday or Saturday, but on Sunday we did catch a nice limit for the four of us. Overall though, it seemed like everyone was at least finding a few fish. The strange thing is that the fish were up in 4-6 ft of water, the deepest we caught a fish was somewhere between 10 and 12 ft (we really didn't put much effort into locating deeper fish). Crawlers on a chartreuse and white striped spinner was the best producer, but other colors of spinners also produced. Speed was highly varied, I normally try to pull spinners about 1.2 mph, but at times using the big engine we'd be around 2 mph, and were still catching fish. Water temps ranged from 73-76 degrees where we were fishing. The best fishing was on Sunday when we ran across fish in a shallow mud line as the wind picked up. We caught 13 keepers in less than 25 minutes. Other than that they were kind of spread out in time and distance for most of the weekend. Good times, as we were only out for a little under 3 hours on Sunday! Most of what we caught will be used for a fish fry at the local Senior Center this fall. We also caught a fair number of small drum, a few goldeye for the pelicans, some white bass, and it was also the first time a Redhorse sucker has ever been caught off the Toon, or for that matter any boat I was skippering. Be careful up there, lots of shallow water a long way out from the shoreline!
