Having a backup of the reservation life-style does them no favors. From my experience they are often thought of as uppity if they leave the reservation and become successful. No incentive to improve and even looked down upon if they do. A program to improve this life and eventually do away with the reservations would go a long way towards improving the Native Americans life. At this point you can't simply cut off all the benefits but there needs to be a plan to eventually do away with them and allow everyone to be self-sufficient. Living off the government isn't good for them or the government. Nothing in the Native American History suggests that the tribes were always provided for. Long before the white man moved west tribes were completely self-sufficient. Proud people they were and the government has reduced them to the state in which they currently live. Someone will argue that they are still proud. BS for many of them. Drive around a reservation and look at the high rate of alcoholism, drug use, no job for many, houses that are dilapidated, wrecked cars in the yard and tell me that proud people live there. There are proud people on every reservation but for me as a whole, I'm not convinced that the percentage is very high.</blockquote>
