I laugh at the point you made about being competitive to an undersized economy, the fact is light crude oil is much easier to refine to make gasoline over the middle eastern black crude oil. The problem is the refinery we have in the US are designed to refine the Saudi oil which doesn't benifet anyone but a small few.
