Odd how things change over time. Japan is our best friend in the Pacific nowadays, second to none.

My grand father is full blooded Hawaiin and even though he passed on January at 90 years old, he always was asked about this day. He always said with a smile, we were scared as shit.....They don't make men like that era much anymore do they....

Having been to both Pearl Harbor and the Normandy Beach area of France, I am very comfortable saying that the carnage of WWII is just something we young'uns can't grasp. Nor can we fully fathom what it meant to be a member of our military back then. For heaven's sake, they didn't even have a GPS to tell them where they were on the planet!

My Dad was an NCO with the 164th Infantry National Guard and after Pear Harbor, he was sent to muster at Walla Walla, Washington. My mother jumped the train and went out there and they married up. After a month or so, he was shipped to Guadalcanal leaving my then pregnant mother to head back to Milnor. My oldest brother was over 3 years old before my dad got to meet him. That was one tough generation.

I can remember the names of a handful of men from Wyndmere who served in the 164th.

The 164th was the first US Army unit to engage the enemy in the Pacific theater. I believe also, that they are the only army unit authorized to wear the us Marine Corps patch on their uniform.
