Spring river walleye fishing can be some of the best action of the year—if you dial in the right jig setup. In this video, I break down everything you need to know about jigging walleyes in current, including how to choose the right jig weight, when to use live bait vs soft plastics, and the best line setups for different river conditions.

Whether you’re fishing heavy current, pitching to seams, or dragging jigs upstream, these tips will help you stay in the strike zone longer and catch more walleyes this spring.

We cover:
• How to pick the right jig weight based on current speed
• Best line choices for sensitivity and control
• When to use live bait vs plastics for spring walleyes
• Boat control and presentation tips for river fishing
• Situations where lighter vs heavier jigs excel

Spring walleyes can be aggressive, but small adjustments in your setup can make a huge difference. These are the same jigging strategies I rely on every spring to consistently catch fish.

Recommended Products and Applications

Six pound Suffix Mono with short shank Northland Tungsten jig when using jigs and minnows. Tungsten dramatically increases the sensitivity of mono and the heavier weight/ smaller profile cuts current. Note I prefer the high vis line when pitching shallow for watching the bite.

Suffix 832 braid in eight pound test tied direct for stained water fishing deep vertical or semi vertical below the boat. Usually use a Northland Deep V Jig for both soft plastic and minnow. This jig works great below the boat or around rock and the hook takes a file well and will bend out.

Suffix 831 braid in ten pound test with an eight pound fluorocarbon leader for jigs and soft plastics. The Northland MVP Jig paired with an Eye Candy Paddle Shad or Keitech Minnow is go to favorite.

Favorite overall jigging rod is a Scheels One Limited Series for sensitivity and weight.
