IMHO; Win and Rem were both stupid as hell with their "shorts". Is anyone stuck with a short action Remington chamber?

SAUM's = '06AI (necked to whatever) case performance in a short action. Not a bad place to be. They've caught on with the LR crowd so they're likely to end up like Rem's BR cartridges, annual or bi-annual production runs of brass and 2-3 factory loadings.

WSM's = 2.5" belted mag case performance. The 270 and 300 are here to stay so the 7 and 325 will tag along and folks will neck parent cases every which way upon a whim. The WSM's sold rifles to people who weren't looking to buy.

I'm not anti-SA; I predicted this situation from the get-go as I felt them a solution to a non-existent problem. If you like to scrounge and tinker that's great! As you well know I cling to the 16ga. Remington actually torqued me a bit when they tried to one up Winchester with their version of shorts while they were having some success with their .404 candles. I saw it as a dick move and accurately predicted obsolescence. Conversely or retardedly; I was much impressed with the .243 and .25 WSSM. They're svelte and handy. I believe Win would've had much success by just introducing these two shorts. Belts don't bother me and I'm not concerned with additional bolt throw.

If Win had offered 22, 24, and 26 WSSM's w/1:8" twist tubes, they'd still be on every shelf.

If Rem wants to dick around they should re-examine their .17.

If Rem wants to reinvent one of their old standbys they should 1:8 a 6mm in a short action with a 3" box/DBM.

Still looking for brass. Cabelas has them published in their most recent catalog but no longer carries the brass. I tried to order them months ago and after 8 or 10 weeks on backorder cabelas cancelled the order.

Is the case diameter the same for the standard length short and WSSM? If so...the fun could begin.

My "vision" for the .17 is a fast twist bbl and various power levels/bullets from backyard pest control to coyote. I'd have one load capable for WT but not advertise it.

"my" WT capable load would push a TTSX as close to 5 grand as possible. I can see this long bbl synthetic stocked gun "in my mind". It's a beaut.

So would be be possible to roll your own out of standard WSM?

I'll re-phrase: Would it be an extreme effort to cut down standard WSM?

Dimensions determine pressure and uniformity is key. Regarding materials, as long as primer pockets hold a reasonable number of times at reasonable pressures and you're not cracking necks, shoulders, or webs, things are good.

I've used Winchester, Remington, Hornady, Speer, Frontier, Federal, WCC, LC, RWS, Norma, and Lapua. I'll grab Lapua first and twice on Sundays given a reasonably easy necking up down or outright headstamp run as-is. Precision and longevity wrapped in a shiny brass package pre-annealed. What's not to love?
