My wife is planning a trip to Minnesota this fall to visit a cousin she has never met coming from Germany. We are going to be around the Detroit lakes area and I was told I need to bring the boat. It will only be for a couple of days. Wondering if I need to get a temp boat registration or does ND cover it for a couple of days? Other question is what does a guy need for a fishing license? Do they have a two day license? And if anyone knows of any lakes or techniques for getting into some walleye action let me know. Thanks in advance.

If your ND registration is current, then you should be fine. As for licenses, a 1 day nonresident is $12 and a 3 day nonresident is $32. Sorry, i can't help you out with what lakes to fish, as i haven't fished anything in that area.

Lakes in MN are terrible for fishing (especially the DL area). Time is better spent "cocktail cruising" taking in the scenery. Make sure you don't bring back any Z-muscles.

MN is terrible for fishing? The DL area especially? Perhaps on the weekend it can be a little tough, but even the popular lakes like DL, Pelican, Sallie are excellent fishing lakes.

Your ND boat license is fine. As far as fishing licenses, yes they do offer short term out of state license options. Pretty much any bait shop, can set you up there. If you are buying bait...buy it in MN as I don't think they allow transporting across state lines...same goes with coming back to ND... do not bring any live bait back.
Lastly, clean your boat, trailer, etc of any signs of ANS. They do have many conservation officers checking boats at boat ramps so be sure you are compliant. Probably would make sense to wash/sanitize boat, trailer, etc before heading back to ND.

Also depends what you after for fishing, if you have kids some of the best pan fish lakes in the state. The weekends are tuff for fishing period, much better fishing early morning or late evening.

You could always catch a few bottle bass at Zorbaz. Sally / Melissa / Big Detroit are fine fisheries, just don't bring any zebra muscles back

I am in MN for a family reunion. Done some fishing. My suggestion is, cut your time in MN in half. Spend the other half in ND for the fishing. Keep the boat at home. Enjoy your trip.

The one day license is actually 24 hours and the 3 day is actually 72. If I remember right you pick the 24 or 72 hours. Example: a 24 hour license would let you fish in the afternoon/evening and again in the morning.

Not many places where you can go catch a largemouth on top-water at sunrise, then go fish some walleyes the rest of the morning. Perhaps end the morning with some smallmouth action. Go in for a late breakfast and back out to catch monster bluegill, do a little tubing, back out for some walleye or smallmouth, and end the day casting for musky. Yeah, that sucks.

Not many places in MN where you could do that and actually catch fish lol. MN for crappies, bass, and musky, absolutely.

I'm headed to MN for meetings later this week. Got the rods rigged for Largemouth action earlier in the day and crappie action in the evening. Looking forward to it. I just skip walleye when I'm over there unless we are talking LOW.

Gotta admit, i'm a little disappointed. I don't know if you can call yourself a good fisherman if the only place you can catch walleyes are devils, sak or oahe.

By Alex, I'd hit Mary or the lake in Alex (Henry?). I've fished trap attacks there and have found good panfishing. Osakis is a good panfish/walleye lake. If I'm fishing D.L. area in the fall, id hit Big Cormorant or Big Detroit. Jigging raps on a hump or lindy rig a weed bed with creek chubs are good staples. I've also done well pulling lead on Big Cormorant.
