I'm in Mobridge, wish it was the holidays and I was in Dickinson. Can you have a buddy talk to a rancher? Everyone's got horses out there.

Yup...just looked. Be a drive but what the hell. I've been up in that area before....a bunch of times. It's about 20 miles north and 10 west I believe

I thought that was where it was. We used to do a lot of hunting and driving around out there back in the day. Used to have a buddy that lived out there and we got to know a lot of ranchers but can't remember any of them now. Had one rancher where we hunted a lot and he lived NW of Medora, he wanted to sell us his ranch and the mineral rights with it. He had quite a few quarters of land as it was not small by no means. I can't remember now if it was $100 or $300 an acre he would sell it to us for. Ya i know but back then we were barely squeeking by and couldn't come up with the money so had to pass. Believe me we have been kicking our asses for many years since that offer. Woulda, coulda, shoulda! OH well not in the cards back then so just have to laugh about it now.
Forgot all about this until now but the rancher always swore up and down that he saw a bigfoot twice while out rounding up cattle. When he told that story his eyes got as big as saucers and he would get almost pale white. Believe him to this day as he definitely wasn't a liar!
Sorry about stealing the thread!

CJR hope everything checks out good for you with your heart!

The family ranch is on lower magpie. Can you get at it with atv? My brother has several horses but I can't get ahold of him. I just got home from work and need to get some sleep otherwise I'd run out there and steal his nags to help out. Good luck!!

We ended up with a handful of guys to walk in this morning and get what's he

left of him. Assuming the coyotes had a feast last night as he was about half boned out when the ticker acted up. I appreciate all the offers of assistance.

So what’s the story with the heart issues? Did they get the elk all packed out? Gotta fill us in on all the specifics.

so here's the story...I headed out Friday morning and was up on Magpie road. As I was getting my pack on a guy stopped to ask if I was after elk or deer. As soon as I said elk he indicated he has just watched a herd walking a ridge. He walked in with me for a bit to make sure I was headed in the right direction (BTW thanks to him for the tip. I don't know who you are other than you were from Dickinson). . About 45 minutes of huffing it up and down the hills got me to within about 400 yards. They were just topping a ridge when I caught them. A couple shots later (more than I would like to admit), I had him down. It took me a bit to get to him. On the walk to him my chest was a bit tight. I thought it was my pack riding wrong so I stopped and readjusted it but that didn't really help. I wrote it off as adrenaline from shooting. Once I got to him I snapped a quick pick and started dressing him. Got the head off and started boning him out. The whole time my chest was getting tighter and tighter. I decided to throw a couple bags of meat in the pack and head to the truck. By this time my chest was killing me. Decided to take a little longer way out as it would put me on a ridge that a buddy was familiar with and if something happened he would know where to start looking at. I called the buddy as soon as I had signal and let him know I was in trouble and headed for the ridge. About half way out I had to dump the meat as I just couldn't carry it. Finally made the ridge and worked my way out. Took me about three hours to get back to the truck. I started it up and headed for Hwy 85 while calling the wife to break the news to her. Ended up at the Dickinson ER. They are thinking it was a mild heart attack. Lots of appointments tomorrow to get everything worked out. My buddy, another bud from work and three other folks walked I yesterday and picked up the meat I dropped as well as boned out the rest of the bull. Surprisingly the coyotes hadn't touched a thing. So very grateful for those that offered to help out. Your generosity was very appreciated!!!

edit...I was asked about the legality of them retrieving my elk. I had called the warden from the hospital. My buddy also talked to him and got a permit to carry it.
