I used to try and make it to Sakakawea for a couple days during the last week or two in October but I gave it up. The older I got the more I realize how It eerie it gets out there when it's cold and windy and you are the only boat on the water. If a guy ever had trouble It would be a long night drifting across the lake. I never even used to think about that when I was young and bulletproof, didn't even have portable phones back then. Never been stranded with a boat and never want to be.

Back around 95 we were open water fishing on December 23 on Devil's Lake. Most times, we're ice fishing Thanksgiving weekend, but every now and then, we'll launch the boat that weekend.

Once my rifle tag is filled, I'm good with it getting cold.
