Fishing for river smallies?

I’m heading on a trip soon and saw there was a river with smallmouth near by so I want to try catching my first river smallmouth. Any tips? Any cheap lures to use incase I get snagged?

I’m planning on fishing the Red or otter tail in the Wapeton area but I’d also like to know about the shyenne also. I don’t know the depth but I know it’s not clear

Fun Anecdote: One time in the State Park I saw a kid limit on salmon with the top version in about an hour. No one else had something close to throw. Need to mention; I didn't personally witness this one: Two kids in there slayed the bastards on 1/4oz white curly tail jigs; steady retrieve.

I think the incidents are reversed but not motivated to correct. Both are true.

Go to Baldhill Dam North of Valley City and you will catch some.

I've thought they'd work in the 'race for trout. The secret is keep them bouncing off the bottom on retrieve.

Seems like if you crank slow and stop periodically, smallies grab on the pause.

Precisely. I know they more or less wobble like any crank yet that profile is something special. I believe the joined "claws" represent a soft shell.

Back in the Hills I've caught a few decent browns while after SM. I don't know the crayfish situation in the 'race. I can't recall ever seeing one.

Back when I was in college we caught nice smallies on jig and twisters, various colors, northland mimic minnows / swimbaits and alot on plastic crayfish imitations which i ran with very little little to no weight at the bottom of the dam I pointed out in your other form.
