Dont know about deer but the MN DNR used to get with Bear Guides along with knowing where larger populations of bears are and put Mineral blocks treated with Anti-tic chemicals and other diseases out in the Spring and continued all summer long. Weird they have no answer for EHD or CWD
I've never heard that ?
And I really doubt that.

Did some further reading and sounds relatively common to add garlic or sulphur to cattle feed at sufficient rate to create a body odor which deters biting insects.

Seems like it could be effective on a captive deer population but dubious on wild deer herd. To create and maintain body odor deterrent would require frequent or constant feeding on garlic-infused feed or minerals. Garlic/sulphur concentration has to be high enough to have an impact without being so strong as to make unappealing to wild deer with other food options. One might smell like an Indian trucker within a few hours after a visit to the Clay Oven lunch buffet but that is resolved by the following day.

As the root cause is cattle which are much more feasible to manage, treating cattle is likely a better bet.
Last time we had an out break buddy put a bunch of blocks at the few water holes left on his property. Neighbors found a lot of dead deer around there waterholes and he only found a couple. More guys started doing it and they said they can’t quantify it but feel they are seeing less than the people that don’t put them out .

I literally had this conversation with a buddy yesterday. Said with the rampant drought again, I was just waiting for the first EHD news.

I'm going to say it because it needs to be said: We need more habitat and we need wetlands. Things aren't getting better if we do nothing. They certainly appear to be getting worse, though.

Why can’t the areas be arial sprayed and kill all them bugs
The Culicoides midge has a clear exoskeleton and avoids sunlight. A ten mile an hour breeze overnight can move them a long way. They chew for a blood meal and inject an anti-coagulate to keep the blood flowing. It takes about 3000 bites in one night to kill a Bison or angus cow. Usually, the brain begins to aneurism. You can literally walk up to an elk or whitetail and touch them on the nose because they have a monster headache and are about to die.

Mule deer are less susceptible but once bitten are carriers. Cattle are carriers. Fly season is over and most ranchers have put their insecticide socks away.

Midge are called no-see-ums but you can see them when they swarm.

Although the first reports of HD involved the EHDV-1 serotype, the most reported infections today are from EHDV-2 (1999) and EHDV-6 (2006). This hybrid serotype is also called the “Indiana strain,” now considered an exotic serotype originating from Australia.

EHDV-6 was first reported in cattle in Illinois, and it likely came to the U.S. from the Caribbean and South America (the infected Caribbean cattle would’ve originally been infected by the Australian cattle). It is called the Indiana strain because this novel reassortant strain of EHDV-6 first occurred in whitetails in Indiana. The Indiana strain now kills large numbers of deer in the Midwest."

Is there any way to treat the water to kill the larvae? I'm assuming the midges hatch from water like mosquito's?

read that article to learn about the soil conditions that the maggots need to thrive/survive (moist soft manure-rich muck, basically)

Pesticides or organophosphates can trace their origins back to nerve gas created during World War One. Not a fan.

Nerve gas came about as a pesticide in the 1930s. The Nazis didn't fully realize how dangerous the stuff was until they sprayed a field with it and ended up killing a bunch of forced laborers.

So you're saying draining wetlands makes it worse. Helping to keep wetlands fuller may mitigate it.

Unfortunately, no. The midges survive in the margins of sloughs and ponds as well as the shorelines and eddies of rivers. Though the changing levels of rivers helps to mitigate those particular populations. As far as control measures, there hasn't been any significant research, to my knowledge, done on large area controls for midges in say "pasture settings". Lots of stuff on controlling them on golf courses, homes, and urban to semi urban settings. BT (bacillus thuringiensis) dunks as they are commonly called, essentially slow dissolve briquets, seem to be the front runner of possible control measures in "pasture settings". However, until funding is made available to study this, it's just speculation and conjecture due to many factors. What does work. Golf course water traps are treated by tossing enough briquets into the water to cover the volume of water within. Usually in the spring with a 120 day formulation. Which means you will have lethal levels of Bt in the water for 120 days. If needed a 30 or 60 day formulation can be added if the seasonal weather requires it. Lots of studies done on this to show successful control. What needs to be done, IMO, is some studies to determine if aerial applications by helicopter to standing waters in a township sized area can control midges during the critical time frames where deer are most susceptible to infection. We did this in Afghanistan to control mosquitos and it worked great. However, no real data using scientific methods was collected as it's pretty hard to gather such data at weekly intervals when you get shot at the third time you show up in the same area. What I do know is that complaints by the troopers of mosquito bites post application by helicopter almost disappeared. Without hard data these are just anecdotal observations. It would be nice to see the gnf fund a 3-5 year study by a Doctoral candidate of Entomology, say from NDSU, to actually study this. However, it seems that throwing money at the CWD debacle is more fashionable albeit utterly useless. That's just the view from this PhD of Entomology, but what do I know? Carry On!
