Had the Field duck Tornado several times near Wildrose and also Quill Lake Sask. The young man I was hunting with had a very high Quality Camera. Started taking pictures and when we got back to his Family's farm downloaded them onto large P.C. could not believe all the different species of ducks in the photos ware you might think was mostly Mallards and some Pintails and one photo showed 4 in a flock of around 150 with leg bands. I've only been "In the Tornado" 1x. I was up in NW MN hunting Ruffs, stopped by a buddy's place and another buddy showed up and frantically told us to get our poop in a group for an evening duck shoot. No decoys, just waders, a bunch of ammo, and a shotgun.
Mallards were retuning from a burned up oat or wheat field, can't recall. Couldn't shoot fast enough to keep the ducks from landing. It wasn't a big slough and there wasn't any ice yet, but, those ducks wanted to be where we were and by god they were gonna sit on that slough or die trying.
I've seen a few duck and lots of goose "Tornados".
Jiffy and I were deer hunting South Central ND '09 or '10 and the mallard tornado was landing so close to the gravel road we were on that with a little planning I think a guy might've been able to snag a few with a big fishing net.
As a mostly non-waterfowl hunter (fair-weather hunter at best), it's always looked to me like deer opener to the end of deer muzzle-loader was the best time for migrating (non-local) Web-Footers.
