I'm looking to buy a Springer Spaniel pup at a reasonable price. Not sure the wife will let me go more than $500.

Springer

We bought one from whispering winds kennel out of Bagley,Mn. Limited Registration. We got a liver and white female. I think they sell tri colors more often. Ours is a little over a year old now.We picked her up about a year ago now. She is doing well thus far. I think it was like $450 with the micro chip. Send me a PM and I could probably send you some pics

I ask everyone that is looking for a springer, are you aware of the incredible energy they have? It will be something you have to deal with.

This is my 2nd Springer. My 10 yr old went blind over the summer so I retired him from hunting...he didn't like that..he is now a full time house dog. But yeah they have energy and yes you should know that going in.
That being said...its a personal choice.
Ford vs Chevy, Aluminum vs Glass, Pointer vs Flusher, docked tail vs no docked tail :;:stirthepot
At the end of the day..to each his own

I wasn't trying to discourage, just to inform. It would be the same if I heard one of my friends that has never had a dog before wanted to get a Saint Bernard. I would inform them that they get to be the size of a pony and probably shouldn't have one in an apartment.

Absolute Gun dogs, Dan Murry would be able to hook you up. I got my male from him in July at 10 weeks. One hell of a hunter this fall, I was quite surprised. He even has a website if your interested.

In Bismarck you've got Tom Ness (Oahe Kennels), Dan Murry (Absolute Gun Dogs), and Paul McGagh (Glencoe Kennels) and any of the 3 could get you a world class springer. They're all gonna bust your budget though.

This.

Ask the wife for a bump in cash department, though.

I get a kick out of you guys who..when a guy states his price point, recommend choices completely over that. Reminds me of used car salesman who..when told a price point of $30,000, starts showing vehicles in the $50,000 range.
Carry on

Just keep an eye on bisman and check herald, forum and Tribune regularly. You can find them for 500 or less half a dozen times per year. No need to pay more. I never paid more than 250. They were all great dogs. As far as energy... when you compare them to other upland breeds like gsp, wire hair, brittney, setter, etc, I think they are on the mellow end of the spectrum. Like with all dogs, spend as much time with them as possible. Even when not doing dog type shit. Once human interaction becomes common, they become calmer beasts.

How do you not let someone know that 3 of the very very best spaniel kennels in all of North America are right in/around Bismarck?

I have owned 2 different English cockers one was bought in Bismarck and one was bought in Wyoming. If I was going to go the spaniel/springer route again I would go with Tom Ness. I have since moved to labs and have been happy but spaniels / springers are tough to beat.

He did say that he was "not sure" if his wife would go over 500.

I believe you but my dads springer was the most batshit insane dog I've ever seen. At like 6 years or so he finally started to settle a bit. Still goes nuts when we bring the bows or guns out to target practice.
