MILNOR, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Authorities in Ransom County are investigating a shooting incident that occurred Friday night, January 2, near Milnor.

Deputies from the Ransom County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for medical assistance around 8:30 p.m. in the 7500 block of 145th Avenue Southeast.

Upon arrival, officials located a 23-year-old man who reported being struck by gunfire.

According to the victim, an unknown vehicle drove past his location and fired shots. The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and subsequently transported for further medical care. His current condition has not been released.

The Ransom County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident. They are receiving assistance from the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NDBCI), the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Ransom County Sheriff’s Office.

That's what it sounds like, he was on his hands and knees. But you should be able to tell the difference between a man and a dog or don't be out there shooting!

It's also illegal to shoot from the motor vehicle. This is appears to be, at a minimum, a case of gross negligence and the shooters should be dealt with severely.

You can shoot Fox and Coyotes from a motor vehicle as long as it's not moving. But what he did was wrong.

Not while night hunting. While night hunting it is a requirement that you are hunting exclusively on foot.

I was going to say the same thing, if he was opening a feeder hut on all fours and most likely of a small profile in the scope it could be the reason why. The problem though is why didnt they check the shot jist in case they didnt kill the coyote. Very unethical way to hunt

I hope this isn't the case, but it wouldn't surprise me if the hunt started and ended at the bar...After a couple beers, driving around scanning for coyotes sounded like a good idea. No sense in going out to check out what you shot, the truck is warm and theres beer in the cab.

Some guys just shouldn't be hunting..In the daylight or night. One definitely needs to use their brain while night hunting though. Not everything out moving around at night, giving off a heat signature is a predator to shoot at.

I will say this: The details released thus far are quite damning. Innocent trapper gets shot by someone (pair of someones), that may have been shooting out of a vehicle in violation of ND law. At the minimum, this is extremely bad decision making on the part of the shooter and may be deserved of legal ramifications. For anyone who has never trapped muskrats, I've trapped muskrats in my day and we ran the traps even in the dark because the rats were active at certain times of the night, so you could up your catch by including a night run (or two) on the trap line.

That being said, let's leave the hanging up to the legal system. We are working on incomplete information at a minimum, and possibly incorrect information given the track record of our media and the rumor mill. Great for lynching someone, not great for arriving at the facts. Because truth be told, not many of us are probably a fan of getting crucified by someone who doesn't have all the information at their disposal.

Like all of you, I am unbelievably saddened by this happening to anyone, but I want the facts...pure and simple. Because, well...sometimes shit happens.

BTW, I have been shot at a couple of times while out hunting. Including a time where my ex and I were in near full orange during deer gun season and we had bullets impacting about 20-30 yds from us while standing in the middle of a ~100 acre wheat stubble field from a teenager who was being taught how to road hunt by his father. The deer were running about 60-70 yds from us between the shooter and us. So, I absolutely get the importance of knowing your backdrop, I am just thinking we may not yet know all we need to know to hang these "hunters". My ex was in absolute tears as I told her to hit the deck and fired a couple of shots from my shotgun to scare the deer away. (we had just filled our deer tags in the same field, only to then observe a bunch of grouse land in the treetops, so we went back after them with scatter guns). It wasn't a good feeling, and I hunted those hunters down!

Saturday night two hunters were out hunting Coyote with thermals. They shot what they thought was a Coyote on a slough. They never went to check on it. But instead went to a bar and talked about it. That when the law was called. They shot a young man from a Hutterite Colony who was checking his Muskrat traps and is now paralyzed from the neck down.

I was told thermals. But with full moon could have been hunting in the moon light.

Was it the bar that called them in ? Hard to put 2 and 2 together so far. Sad that this happened , the ONLY possible good thing that can come out of this is people get educated.

I did not mean to paint the innocent victim as the bad guy. I apologize if anyone took it that way.
There were a couple of legitimate responses as to why traps are checked at night.
