Just cut up a few boxelder trees in the yard. Tops were loaded with buds so I dragged them over to the bird feeder.
Guessing deer will be on them this evening?

Pic is from my back window.

Boxelders or "Manitoba Maple" are a weak messy misshapen mess of a tree. But they're prolific as all get out.

AND you can tap boxelders for sap/syrup. Tastes like cotton candy to me.
But sugar content of the sap is kinda low, so be ready to boil a lot.

I'll be tapping the big hybrid maples in our yard tomorrow - it's looking like good sap flow in the forecast (freezing nights and thawing days).

Ever try using RO to concentrate the sap?

Hinge cut a young tree and you basically have a natural bait pile. Timing is critical, but late season in a year with a foot of snow, a hinge cut tree is, IMO, often better than any corn pile ever dumped. Set up a trail cam. Could be interesting. Share the pics if you've a mind. I'd like to see how it works on the MN side, where you have more trees.

Kirk, will post pics when the deer come.

As for hinge cutting, I've done that to 100s of trees however not for browse purpose (regrowth ) but for horizontal bedding cover.
