I'm guessing it might be a pay site in the end ? Some super device that eliminates the need for phone and internet plans because way cheaper and wise to do ?

A medium sized data center uses over 100 million gallons of water per year, uses 44,000 to 175,000 megawatts of power per year, puts out between 60 to 78 decibels of noise 24 hours a day (Constant heavy traffic sound), and when backed up by diesel generators can put thousands of metric tons of pollutants into the air. IMO, there is PLENTY of evidence for AGGRESSIVE pushback. So I guess lycan can label me an idiot OR explain how his beloved AI is incorrect.

A closed loop cooling system doesn’t use up that water
If it was a closed loop system, there wouldn't be a water usage measured in a per year basis. However, it is measured in a per year basis, so I'm VERY suspicious to think it's a closed loop system. Additionally, the data centers already in operation are NOT closed loop systems. I think the closed loop system BS is used up until construction begins and then it becomes to costly to put in a closed loop system and it will now be open system and now it's too late to stop construction. AI even says that the vast majority of data centers use evaporative cooling system. That's just me though.

Overall, data centers (including the AI-driven portion) remain a small share of total U.S. water use—even under growth projections—while homes and other facilities (hospitals, businesses, universities, etc.) account for far larger absolute volumes when viewed nationally.


Current Scale (≈2023 data)

Projections (to ~2028–2030)


Growth is driven heavily by AI and hyperscale computing:


  • Direct data-center water use is commonly projected to rise to 38–73 billion gallons per year by ~2028 (roughly 2–4× the 2023 level) under various LBNL and related scenarios.
  • Some higher-growth or longer-horizon analyses (to 2030) show continued increases, with peak daily demands potentially requiring hundreds of millions of gallons per day of new capacity in aggressive cases. AI servers specifically are modeled in some studies as contributing hundreds of millions of cubic meters annually (hundreds of billions of gallons range across scenarios).

Even at the high end of these projections:


  • Data centers would still represent only a low single-digit percentage of total public water withdrawals or consumptive use in most national analyses (e.g., 0.6–1.1% of public withdrawals or up to ~4–7% of public consumptive use in some 2030 baseline scenarios, depending on assumptions about efficiency and growth).
  • Homes + commercial/institutional facilities would continue to dominate the non-agricultural, non-power-plant portion of water use.

Key Caveats


  • Local vs. national: Nationally the percentage is small. Locally (especially in arid Southwest or stressed aquifers where many new data centers are proposed), a single large facility can be a noticeable fraction of a city’s or county’s water budget—sometimes comparable to thousands of homes or a significant commercial user.
  • Direct vs. indirect: Most public debate focuses on on-site evaporative cooling. The much larger indirect component (power-plant cooling) is tied to the broader electricity grid and is not unique to AI/data centers.
  • AI share within data centers: AI workloads are the main growth driver, so a rising share of future data-center water use will be AI-related, but exact percentages are scenario-dependent and not fixed.
  • Efficiency trends (better cooling designs, more air/liquid cooling, reclaimed water) could moderate the growth, while faster AI expansion would increase it.

Bottom line: Projected AI/data-center water use is growing quickly and can be locally significant, but it is still expected to remain a small single-digit (or lower) percentage of overall U.S. water use compared with homes, businesses, hospitals, universities, agriculture, and power generation. The bigger water story nationally remains irrigation and thermoelectric power plants.

Ellendale is in operation and uses closed loop liquid cooling system (not straight water).

No, in that instance it would be more like protesting gas prices by driving around a lifted pickup with banners expressing one's disapproval of gas prices.

Maybe you should do some research before you post BS and make a fool of yourself?

Hate to burst some people's bubble here, but the county commissioners have to follow the law. Not wanting a data center near your home is not enough, it's kind of like not wanting people of other races or religions on your block. As long as they follow the law, there isn't much you can do to prevent it.

So, go to the meetings, express your displeasure with them coming in, but realize we live in a country of laws. I know being the Devil's advocate here is probably not welcome, but when you want to install that feedlot or other undesirable at your place, you will thank the laws for being on your side.

And yes, I've been on the same side as you all when it came to a combined gravel pit and asphalt plant some Dickinson company wanted to put on the neighbor's side of the fence a few years ago. It made my parent's place borderline unlivable. It's no longer in operation, but we showed up and complained about their getting a permit, the county only said to report violations (air quality from both dust and asphalt fumes). I believe it was actually the neighbor, who after seeing the problem himself refused to allow the company to occupy the site in subsequent years.
