My 2014 G3 Jon Boat with a 115 with just me can go about 44 with a load of guests will be 34-36 mph. But I can run full throttle in 8-10" of water too.

    Grand Forks Catfishing?

From shore I would use 3 or 4 oz to make darn sure you are not drifting. I the heat comes as forecast the fish will be feeding on the breaks or in the middle and you will want to stick. I would look at Lincoln Park or the other spots noted. Remember that now you have to have the license for...

Walleye/Sauger Fall Run in Red River

I am by no means an expert on RR eyes. The water is so clear now that the walleyes are already going nuts shallow. I caught three in 10 minutes on frogs last week while catfishing. As the water temp cools (if the water stays this clear) it is going to be gangbusters here in the next few weeks...

    Muskie in Red River?

There was a huge musky landed in the Red Lake River back in I think 2000 or 2001. It was in the Grand Forks Herald. My guess is they got in through the Red Lake or Ottertail Rivers.

    Muskie in Red River?

About 15 years ago I had a goofy feeling hit on a cat line. When I set the hook the line went slack and right behind the boat to my astonishment a huge musky came up and gave me a tail dance before diving in and cutting my line. No question what it was, I only wish I had been able to land it.

    Tagging Catfish

Truthfully we don't pay much attention to them after we catch them. We tagged a few in the mid-20s but never put any on the scale. The fish seem to be running heavy for this time of year. Can't wait to get back up there in Mid-Sept when the real big ones are around.

    Tagging Catfish

So I have been very lucky over the past couple years to catch 9 (3 last year and 6 this year) catfish that were tagged in Canada and have migrated here to the Grand Forks area. While catching tagged catfish is not all that odd to catch 9 in that short of a time apparently is. I received an...

How beneficial are fishing reports anyway???

Being the guy that writes the weekly report and has done it for quite a few years now this pretty much sums it up. I try to give the basics but don't want to be to exact so I still have some spots and advantages. Any weekender who reads my Red River reports should be able to catch fish with...

    Tagged fish?

With the higher waters of the Red the past couple years (flooding at the right time) we have been seeing many Canadian catfish that were tagged in 2013 below the Lockport Dam and have swam 300 miles upstream to be caught here in Grand Forks. I had a client get one on Thursday and yesterday two...

    Minnow prices

No bitching here about the bait bill. When the bait bill is high the cats are biting and business is good. I was just pointing out out the price difference vs $3 or $4 per scoop.

    Minnow prices

I have done that actually. I am equipped with more tank space than many bait shops if I set it all up. Wholesale suckers are not as cheap as one may think. Sometimes the bait needs or delivery times don't jive with the schedule so you still end up at the bait shop.

    Minnow prices

I know it is not possible in most places but you should try going through 6-10 dozen suckers per week at a buck each.

    What's everyone using for nets?

I use a Frabill Halibut net for catfish, a Kuhuna for sturgeon and a Conservation Series in my walleye boat. The one nets I use for catfishing are the more expensive PowerCatch series. What sold me on these in particular is it takes about 11 tons to wear the netting out. Replace and keep fishing.

What is your favorite fishing quote?

Just when you think you have these fish figured out they prove you stupid If you have a bad day of fishing and learn from it you still had a successful day. If you don't learn from it you just had a bad day.

How did you get your handle/nickname?

I had other names before but when I got my Coast Guard license people started calling me CaptainBrad so I just started to use it.
